My Dearest Calvin,
I can't believe it's been almost a month since you passed. Your untimely passing was such a shock to me that it's still hard to believe I won't see again at all your venues and be able to give you a shout out on the phone. It just seems like yesterday that I saw you at The Grand Del Mar on April 10th the week before God decided it was your time to go to heaven. That night was such a magical night and you played all the songs I love including the last one that you dedicated to me, "You're Making Me High" by Toni Braxton. You learned that song a couple of years ago after I told you how much I liked it and memorized it with your photograhic memory immediately. I was so blessed to have known you over the last 11 years originally meeting you at Humphrey's when you jumped offstage and did a little dance with me. Everybody had their special connections with you Calvin; you connected all the dots. Every musician that was at your service said they had projects in the works with you and what are they going to do now? You in all your wisdom would say to continue on and know that God is going to look after them and now we have a special guardian angel looking after us. Calvin you made such a huge positive impact in my life and the lives of others, I thank you for your friendship over the years and all the wonderful singers and musicians that you introduced me to. I know you're at peace now and with your old friends; Tim, Hollis and Carl amongst others. I will miss you but you will forever be in my heart.
Love, Diane

Hello Cal,
Best too you.
May 8, 2008
Dearest Calvin,
When I learned this week that you passed away so recently and so suddenly, I was in shock--and I'm still in shock. I knew you and your family from 1987 through 1995. I loved you, and I loved your Aunt Ruth and your brother, Clifford.
You had a profound effect upon my life. I'm sorry that I missed your services and your Celebration of Life gathering. It's hard to imagine you not walking on this earth among us. The world was a better place with you in it. I'm sure I'm not alone in saying that your wit, talent, and presence will be missed greatly. Love to you and your family.
Always,
Janie

Two young men I knew passed onto their eternal rewards separated by a day and nearly three thousand miles. On April 18, we lost Calvin, a warm hearted man with a golden heart. One day later I was at my brother Gregory Julian's deathbed in the city of Clairton near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, dying from liver cancer. He, too, was a man with a golden heart. Calvin was 48 and my brother 45 at their death. One may say they were both so young. It's true, but both lived such full lives. As is said about military veterans during wartime, "All gave some. Some gave all." So it was with Calvin and my brother. No they didn't die in military combat, but they died by giving their all with what each did in the community to make a difference in the lives of so many. I came to know Calvin by working with him for the City of San Diego. We both loved music and it was that keen interest that brought us together while putting on Safety Fairs in the middle 1990's for several years. Calvin through his Cal's Kids made a difference. Gregory through his involvement in so many different facets of community service made a difference in his community. Gregory, too, loved music, especially the great hymns of the church. I can see my brother asking Calvin to play some of those on the keyboard. I'm certain that the tears of mouning will be replaced by the warmth of memories of both. They didn't know each other, but in ways they did. Both will be sorely missed, but they will never be forgotten. Rest in peace Calvin and Gregory. Calvin, we will miss you very much. Michelle and I have gotten to know you these past 15 years and we are so glad that we did. We often wondered when you had the time to sleep because you were so busy. You were not only a "Calvin of All Trades", you mastered them. Your life will serve as an inspiration to the children in your foundation and a lesson to us all to follow our dreams, because they do come true. You always made us feel very special, from our birthdays and various parties and events where you performed. We have so many good memories from Tiana's Christmas parties to your heart felt performance at Alison and Julio's wedding. Calvin, we know that you are in a better place now. Please keep making wonderful music and keep watch over us down here as we will do our best to continue and honor your spirit. We miss you and we love you.

Dear Calvin:
You have touched my life about 5 years ago when I had first met you at Humphreys, You had sang "What you won't do for love" By Bobby Caldwell for my birthday, evertime I listen to that song I always remember you. I told your family just how much you have touched me and you are a very unique man, I will love you and you will always be in my heart and living on through your music. Much Aloha, Stephanie S. My dearest Calvin, words can never express the depth of my feelings toward you and, from our conversations it seems, your feelings toward me. Shakespeare wrote entire plays on single elements of love and tragedy, yet even the words of Shakespeare could never express the depth of our relationship… if Shakespeare cannot express it then my words surely cannot… Yet my words are what I have… You were an artist, a scientist, a brilliant man in all facets of the word… you were loving, and compassionate, and caring… you were truly a gift to the world, and truly a gift and dear to me… Now you are a gift to the Lord… an angel in the Heavens… As you were my angel here on Earth… I miss you and love you so very much, my very best special Angel friend. I will love you for all eternity…Love and Muscles and always your Personal Trainer! xo

Dear Calvin,
I was deeply shocked and saddened when I heard the news of your passing. It just does not seem real to me. You were truly an angel on earth and now you have gone home. You always amazed me at how much you could accomplish as ONE person, but you did it all. You were truly inspiring and your legacy will far surpass your time here on earth. Although you were on here for such a short time, I believe you lived your life to the absolute fullest. I hope you know that you touched so many people. It was apparent by the turn out at your memorial yesterday. I am so thankful that I was blessed to meet you and earn my MBA with you. You always had a smile on your face every week when I walked into class, which would always make me smile. You were a sweet, handsome, caring, giving person that I will never ever forget. Although I am so selfishly sad that you are not here anymore, I am so blessed that I was fortunate enough to meet you in this life. See you on the other side. :)

I have not seen you in a while, but I still remember the times I did you would always gave me a big hug and made me feel special. Every time I say Calvin Romance, I think of all the wonderful times I had with you and the great memories of feeling so good listening to your music.
I was there when you played the little joints and on Friday nights at Smokey in La Mesa with a bunch of friends having a great time dancing to some of the best music around, and of course, Humphreys. Oh God you were good!
With you gone, the music world (or anyone that met you) will not be the same. I will miss you so very much. You were an exceptional friend to me.
Although we loved him dearly
We could not make him stay.
A golden heart stopped beating.
God broke our hearts to prove to us,
He only takes the Best!
We have lost you but The Almighty has you now. Peace.

Dearest Calvin,
I am trying so hard to wrap my mind around the past few days knowing you have moved on from this earth. I will make sure to read this out loud hoping that if heaven isn’t high tech you will hear me speak the words.
There are so many memories that I have to cherish. We had some incredible moments together, yet I will always be perplexed by your covertness. The memories I will use for my own comfort are simple. The walks around Point Loma, going to taco shops and your dislike for hot sauce as I poured it all of my food, you singing to me, cuddling, my family enjoying that one evening with you so much, our talks about people close to us dying (I can almost hear what you would tell me, if I you could, today), your words of inspiration to me about continuing my education, even now, after the BA was finally achieved (You would be happy to know I did go and take my quiz today before coming to your service), 007 movies (they drove me crazy), the look on your face at the airport when my hair was really blonde (I’m glad it was dark again today for you, but like before I can never commit to a color just because you liked it), Mission Bay together when we ate pizza and watched the fireworks back in 1999, you still talked about that night!
But most of all the friendship that you maintained with me, after it became obvious that it couldn’t be more for now, which has ended up being eternally on this earth. It is my sincere wish that somehow we connect again. The e-mail you sent last week is a blessing; I know you were thinking of me.
I hope that your family and friends will find comfort in knowing how much you were loved. We each had our own special place with you, thank you for mine.
With adoration.... Calvin, your absence will be missed more than you could ever know.

It doesn't seem possible that Calvin is gone! It seems like only yesterday that he sang so beautifully at our wedding and at so many of our Christmas parties. He was bigger than life - so handsome, vibrant, intelligent and talented. What a life he had, and he really lived it! There will never be another Calvin and he will be greatly missed.

Calvin I was so blessed as so many others were to have you in my life. I wish it could have been longer but your friendship, your mentorship meant the world to me and always will. I know we crossed paths for a reason and I am so grateful for that. I will always remember the lessons you have taught me, the talks, the laughs, the joy, and the writing that brought our spirits together. Your spirit lives on in so many. Heaven's gates have opened and there is a new angel singing from above and guiding us.

Calvin, it is such a shock to hear of your passing. I have always enjoyed seeing you perform; sharing our exploits of working in municipal government; and our tales of growing up in the Bronx.
I will miss you my friend. Keep playing that sweet music, and signing those vibrant songs. I know they will always be appreciated. Take care of yourself my friend.

Calvin was truly a good kind hearted person he was one of my dearest best friends that I have in this world from 1980 when i met him in Schofield Barracks Hawaii, we were both in the Army at the time I was playing bass guitar with some guys in the recreation center on post I still remember the song it was Glide by Pleasure, when Calvin walked in and was checking the groove out, After the session we talked and was friends right away and been since then. He started his own band in Schofield a little while after we met and short after that I joined him, I was his second bass guitar player he named me “The Great MNM” we had some good times and I will always have him in my heart. I’m going to miss you my brother.
Love your other brother

To the family and friends of Calvin, you have all my sympathy and may God bless you through this time of sorrow. I met Calvin over 20 years ago when he was staioned in Hawaii at Schofield Barracks. He used to play in a band with my then husband, Mario Marrero. We were all so young and so silly. Calivin used to make me laugh all the time. He was like a member of the family, my brother with all the jokes. Even though we were all the same age, Calvin would knock on our door and when I opened it he would say,,mom dad i'm home. LOL And he would never come empty handed. Ususally he had pizza and soda. We would stay up all night eating pizza, making up silly songs and just laughing at his jokes. Calvin made me not be homesick so much. I'm really gonna miss him. Even though I hadn't seen him in years when I heard that he passed, I had to stop and sit down. He was really one of the good ones. You don't meet many people in your life that you really, truely like. I liked Calvin.

So shocked and saddened to hear about my fellow city employee, Diversity champion, and all-around good guy. Never forget singing with him at Metro's Pt.Loma upgrade opening...Calvin could even play a Sewer Treatment plant gig with style! Always giving, such a big heart. Hear to believe you're gone, you made the World a warmer and brighter place to be.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."
It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."
God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.
If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.
So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.
And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Calvin, how you have touched so many hearts with your music and your genuine kind and caring soul. Each moment spent with you brought me joy. Each time I watched you perform your music, you brought me peace and reminded me the joys of life. It saddens me that I could not share more time with you. I will always hold the memories close to my heart. May the Lord bring you peace and may you continue to share your music with the angels in heaven. All my love.

Calvin: My heart is truly broken to think you are gone forever. I met you 15 years ago and was entranced with your talent and your spirit. I introduced you to my circle of friends who all now have their special memories of you. You played for my wedding and paid a special tribute to my father "Dance with my Father" and there was not a dry eye in the house. I will never forget you and I will miss you horribly. You are now an Angel singing to the Angel's Calvin. I close in saying Good Bye and God Bless You. Love, Alison Sanchez
