G. Scully Obituary

Easton The Rev. G. Michael Scully, C.S.C., passed away peacefully, Wednesday, July 16, 2008, at Holy Cross House in Notre Dame, Ind. He was 79 years old. Father Scully was born September 3, 1929 in Quincy, a son of John and Theresa (Shea) Scully. He attended the minor seminary high school program at the University of Notre Dame. After high school, he worked for two years at First National Bank of Boston, before returning to the seminary at North Easton, in 1949. Following his novitiate year, he professed first vows in the Congregation on August 16, 1952. He attended Stonehill College from 1949-1952 and was awarded a B.A. in Philosophy. He professed final vows in the Congregation on August 16, 1955 and went on to study theology at Holy Cross College in Washington, D.C. He received an M.A. in Theology in 1955. He was ordained to the Priesthood on June 5, 1958 in Bridgeport, Conn., by Bishop Lawrence Sheehan. He later studied at Boston College where he earned a M.A. in English Literature. His first assignment was as an English teacher at Notre Dame High School in Bridgeport, from 1959-1965. At the high school, he also served as moderator of the school newspaper. From 1965 until 1975 he taught English at Stonehill College in Easton. While at Stonehill, he took courses in theatre at the University of Massachusetts and introduced courses in theatre at Stonehill. Following his assignment at Stonehill College, he served as a Parochial Vicar at St. Patricks Parish in Wareham, from 1976-1977. He then began a second career as a hospital chaplain, first at Cardinal Cushing Hospital in Brockton (1978-1979), and later at Framingham Union Hospital in Framingham, from 1979-1990. On the occasion of his 50th anniversary of ordination to the Priesthood, it was noted in the jubilee booklet: His background in literature sharpened both his wit and his sensitivity for his second career as a hospital chaplain. He was known for his great empathy and understanding. In 1990, he was granted senior status and moved to the Holy Cross residence in North Dartmouth. There he continued his compassionate service to the sick and dying as a chaplain to the local hospice movement. In 1999, due to declining health, he moved to Holy Cross House on the campus of the University of Notre Dame where he remained until his death. Father Scully was preceded in death by his parents and by his sister, Joan Marie Foran. He is survived by his six nieces, Mary Foran of Oakland, Calif., Lucy Foran of Harwich, Ann Marie Pallotta of Baltimore, Md., Jane Furtado of Hilo, HI, Joan Laurila of Attleboro and Virginia Foran-Cain of Leonardtown, Md.
