Zoe Steere Obituary

Martha's Vineyard Zoe Ione (Smith) Steere, of Vineyard Haven, passed away Saturday, Aug. 2, 2008, at Marthas Vineyard Hospital. She was the wife of Jesse Steere Jr., who predeceased her in 1997. Zoe was born in New London, Conn., Oct. 3, 1941, a daughter of Arthur Henry Smith and Mary Ione (Puterbaugh) Smith. She was raised in Whitman and graduated from Whitman High School. She lived on Marthas Vineyard after marrying Jesse in 1982. She retired from the town of Edgartown as the administrator in the waste water department and also from the library. Zoe enjoyed traveling and her highlights were Russia and England amongst many other places. She was also an avid reader. She is survived by her daughter, Michelle Gingras of Vineyard Haven; and her son, Douglas Gingras of Chicago; her beloved grandchildren, Nicholas Giliberto of Vineyard Haven, Rebecca Lee Ventura of Rochester and Harlan Gingras of Chicago; her sisters, Faye Pineo and her husband Carroll of New Hampshire, Barbara Gould and her husband Robert of Rhode Island; her brothers, Charles T. Smith and his wife Joan of Randolph and Philip A. Smith and his wife Shirley of Vineyard Haven. She also leaves her stepchildren, Jesse Steere III, Sharon Spencer and Jennifer Basford. She was predeceased by her parents and her sister Myra Doherty. She also leaves three step-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Her graveside service will be held Saturday, Aug. 9, at 11a.m. in the Oak Grove Cemetery, Pacific Avenue, Oak Bluffs. Donations may be made in her memory to the MV Cancer Support Group, P.O. Box 2214, Vineyard Haven, MA 02568. Arrangements are under the care of the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road, Oak Bluffs. I remember Zoe from high school, but I have not seen her since that time, which was 50 years ago. I remember her as a very pretty and pleasant young lady. My condolences to all her family. May Zoe rest in eternal peace.
