Barbara Williams

EASTON Barbara (Bissett) Williams, 76, a resident of Easton for the past 61 years, died Thursday evening, at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, after a period of failing health. She was the wife of David Williams for 57 years. Born in Stoughton December 10, 1931, a daughter of the late William T. and Mary Evelyn (Atwater) Bissett, she was raised in Stoughton until the age of 12, moving then to Easton, where she was a 1949 graduate of Oliver Ames High School. Barbara was employed by the U.S. Postal Service and worked as a clerk for the South Easton Post Office for 33 years. A longtime member of the Covenant Congregation Church in Easton, she was a member of the Easton Historical Society, the Natural Resource Trust of Easton, Friends of Borderland and Friends of Wheaton Farm. A former member of the Evangelical Congregational Church of Easton, she served as past president and treasurer of the Sheldon Guild, was a deaconess at the church was also a Sunday school teacher. She was a member of the YMCA, a 10 year 4H Leader of the Easton Dinner Bells, and a cub scout leader. She led many AMC Canoe Trips. A girl Scout Leader, she was the recipient of the Gold Award in Scouting. She was a Den Mother of Pack 54, and a recipient of the Thomas Curtin Award from the Old Colony Y for dedication to fitness in the face of adversity during the recovery of breast cancer. Barbara was the past Steward and President of the APWU South Shore Area Local, a member of the Appalachian Mountain Club and enjoyed traveling, camping, canoeing and hiking. She was a devoted wife, mother and friend to many. In addition to her beloved husband, she is survived by three children, Albert Williams of West Bridgewater, Jean Atwater-Williams of Farmington, Conn. and Ruth Williams Carrigan of East Bridgewater; a sister, Rachel Nelson of Randolph, N.J. and Richard P. Bissett of Easton; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was also the sister of the late William H. Bissett, Paul C. Bissett, Donald M. Bissett and Martha J. Richard. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend visiting hours, Monday, from 5-8 p.m., in the Covenant Congregational Church, 204 Center St., Easton. The funeral will be held Tuesday, at 10 a.m., in the Church. Interment will follow in Furnace Village Cemetery, Easton.
