Gordon Sheard Obituary

WHITMAN Gordon J. Sheard, 78, died Sunday, Nov. 9, after a brave battle with lung cancer. He was the husband for 51 years to Mary (Cyr) Sheard. Born in Milton, he was a son of the late Albert and Agnes (Armstrong) Sheard. He was a graduate of Boston Latin High School, Class of 1948. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, enlisting in September 1951. He received his basic training at Fort Dix, N.J., and additional training for the Army Security Agency at Fort Devens. He spent almost two years in Germany with the 334th Communications Reconnaissance Company and was honorably discharged, having attained the rank of sergeant, in September 1954. Gordon later attended Northeastern University, where he graduated with honors in 1958, receiving his BBA degree and majoring in insurance. He was employed a by Liberty Mutual Insurance Co. for over 43 years, the last 13 of those years as chief underwriter, before his retirement in 1991. He enjoyed gardening and traveling, but his greatest joy came from time spent with his wife, children and grandchildren. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, James G. Sheard and Susan A. Sheard, both of Whitman; his brother, Edwin T. Sheard and his wife Lillian of Florida; and his grandchildren, Patrick J. and Emily E. Sheard.
