Barbara Tirrell Obituary

Barbara Marie Fortier Tirrell East Bridgewater Barbara Marie Fortier Tirrell, of East Bridgewater, died at home Saturday, Oct. 27, following a lengthy illness. She was the wife of Richard Wesley Tirrell for 52 years. She was born 76 years ago in Chelsea, Ma, the daughter of the late Carmella and Joseph Fortier. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her mother-in-law Eileen; siblings Marguerite, Virginia and Paul; children Richard, Linda, Lorraine, Michael and Sandra; grandchildren Aviva, Leila, Lisa, Shayna, Cari, Zachary and Anthony; great-grandchildren, Sydney, Naftali, Ryleight and Yeshara. Her granddaughter, Tina passed away a year ago. She graduated from Brockton High school in 1949 and received a B.A. from Bridgewater State Teachers College in 1953. She taught in the Brockton school system for a few years and the Hanson school system for the remainder of her career, where she served as a classroom teacher, Principal of the L.Z. Thomas school, and an art teacher until she retired in 1994. She was loved by her students and instilled in them a desire to learn (or else!). A trip in 1974 to a Native American Studies course in Minnesota sparked a lifelong love of travel, with trips to many places in the United States, the most memorable being Alaska, Missouri, Florida, Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, Washington, Texas, Louisiana and Washington, D.C. She also visited many other countries including Canada, England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, France, Israel, Egypt, Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay. She was a member of the Teacher's Association for her entire career. After retiring she became very active in the community and was involved in the Retired Educators Association of Massachusetts, Friends of the Library (East Bridgewater), and served as President of the Women's Club of East Bridgewater for many, many, many years. She was an avid reader, having come in second in a secret contest held at the library for the most books checked out in a one year period." You would always find her in the Mystery section. She was an actress in many plays and loved to play the villain, with especially memorable roles as the High Troll of Goblin Glen and Marley's Ghost in A Christmas Carol. In younger days she was a Girl Scout leader, a cheerleading coach and loved to go camping. She was a sports fan and loved the New England Patriots (Go Pats!) and the Boston Red Sox (Go Sox!) She was smart, kind and generous, a wonderful and involved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, daughter and friend. She was dearly loved by all who knew her and her memory will remain in our hearts forever. A gathering will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 30, from 5-9 p.m. with a memorial service beginning at 6 p.m. at the East Bridgewater Commercial Club, 1 Nielsen Ave (Water St), East Bridgewater, MA. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to either the East Bridgewater Women's Club or Friends of the Library, either can be sent in care of: The East Bridgewater Public Library, 32 Union St., East Bridgewater, MA 02333. Arrangement by the Wales-Prophett Funeral Home, East Bridgewater.

There is very little I could add to all the wonderful things that I have read about Barbara in this guest book...and I agree with each and every one of them. We worked together at the Indian Head School in Hanson for 10 years and I loved her passion for life and education. Her spirit was contagious to the faculty and most importantly, her students. You always knew exactly where you stood with Barbara and I respected her for that. Both of my children were fortunate to have known her as a teacher and as a friend (all the activities at Camp Kiwanee). We were so furtunate to have had her in our lives now matter how briefly. She will be missed.

I learned to love Barbara Tirrell during the time she was head of the District Directors of the GFWC of Massachusetts and I represented the Cape and Islands. She was always ready to laugh and learn, to tackle the difficult and to teach about life by the way she lived. As editor of TOPICS, I always waited for a photo showing Barbara in colonial dress with other hostesses at Clough House. She even told me how to make a mop cap!
Farewell Barbara, all who knew you will miss you.

Grandma... is what I always called her, even thought she was younger than my own mother. Because she was like a mother hen, like a grandmother to all that dwell on earth. Unconditional love, unlimited acceptance, non-judgmental spirit, love to all, young and old. Color, race, national origin, financial status, size, shape, religion... none of these made a difference. All she cared about is that you were a part of the human race, or an animal or even a plant for that matter. There are many people that do good in this world and get much recognition for it, she was up there with the best of them, but her recognition and rewards are all in the Heavenly Kingdom. I ask you to say the following prayer for her. It is a prayer for the Departed from the writings of the Baha'i Faith. May God bless you all.

O my God! O my God! Verily, thy servant, humble before the majesty of Thy divine supremacy, lowly at the door of Thy oneness, hath believed in Thee and in Thy verses, hath testified to Thy word, hath been enkindled with the fire of Thy love, hath been immersed in the depths of the ocean of Thy knowledge, hath been attracted by Thy breezes, hath relied upon her supplications to Thee, and hath been assured of Thy pardon and forgiveness. She hath abandoned this mortal life and hath flown to the kingdom of immortality, yearning for the favor of meeting Thee.

O Lord, glorify her station, shelter her under the pavilion of Thy supreme mercy, cause her to enter Thy glorious paradise, and perpetuate her existence in Thine exalted rose garden, that she may plunge into the sea of light in the world of mysteries.

Verily, Thou art the Generous, the Powerful, the Forgiver and the Bestower.

Working with Barbara in the General Federation of Women's Clubs of Massachusetts has been a delight. As President of the Southern District President's Club I shall miss her, as we all will. We shall have to go on without her knowledge and spirit as best as we can. May the family take heart in knowing she was well liked and respected within our organization.

Dear Barbara was always a delight to be in her company. We became friends thru our membership in the Massachusetts Federation and particularly the Southern District President's Club. She had an special devotion to the Federation's historic Clough House located behind the Old North Church in Boston. She would bring a group from her club yearly to act as docents to greet tourists from all over the world, She was a gracious greeter. She made aprons and hats of the colonial period for the docents to wear. She will be remembered as dedicatd, loyal and a joy to be around. I salute you, Barbara and I am proud to know you.
My heartfelt sympathy to your family.
