Edward Falvey Obituary

Hingham Edward J. Falvey, 72, of Hingham, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 22, 2008 in his home surrounded by his family and in the arms of his wife. Ed was born in Somerville, Massachusetts on March 5, 1936, son of Mary (OShea) Falvey and Michael Falvey. He graduated from Somerville High School in 1953 and joined the Army, serving from 1955 to 1957. After returning from the service, he married his sweetheart, Barbara (Natale) Falvey of Weymouth and they settled in Medford Massachusetts, where together they began Eds greatest achievement: his family. Professionally, Ed served as a mentor and leader to many in the financial services industry. In 1953 at the age of seventeen, he began his illustrious career at New England Trust Company where he worked for 25 years and became a Senior Vice President. In 1979, he joined Keystone Mutual Funds, which later became Evergreen Investments. During his 20 years there, he rose to become President of the Keystone Investor Resource Center until his retirement in 1998. While working, Ed earned his undergraduate degree in 1965 and his Masters of Business Administration in 1969, with honors, from Northeastern University. He was also President of the Sigma Epsilon Rho Honor Society from 1971 to 1972. Ed was a Senior Instructor of Management for 15 years at Northeastern University Evening College. He also served as an industry advisor to the Business Program Director at Northeastern. Ed was a founder, leader and supporter of the National Investment Company Service Association (NICSA), a non-profit mutual fund trade association whose membership includes over 400 companies operating in major financial centers in North America, Europe and Asia. He served on the NICSA Board of Directors from 1974 until 1980. He was the Treasurer from 1975 to 1978, and the President & Chairman from 1978 to 1980. He provided outstanding leadership on several executive steering committees including the National Education Committee, the Executive and Nominating Committees, the Membership and Marketing Committee, and the East Coast Committee from its inception through present. Until the day he passed, Ed served on the NICSA Board of Directors ex officio. In 1992, Ed was awarded the first-ever PricewaterhouseCoopers Award established that year to recognize volunteers who have generously and skillfully contributed to NICSA's stature as the mutual fund industry's primary source of expertise in shareholder servicing and operations. Ed was Program Chair for the first ever NICSA Annual Conference in 1983. Notably, at the conferences 25th Anniversary celebration in 2007, he was awarded the associations Lifetime Achievement Award which, according to NICSA, is bestowed, only occasionally, to honor an individual who has distinguished himself or herself during a successful career in the mutual funds industry, and also by his or her significant contribution to the success of NICSA. Ed is and remains the only person ever to receive this award from NICSA. It was written that, Ed was a mentor, confidant, advisor and friend to generations of NICSA boards, committees and individuals, garnering him a lengthy standing ovation. Eds professional success was surpassed only by his success in raising his family. After retirement, he spent his years playing golf, traveling with his wife, and attending nearly every game, recital and important event in the lives of his 13 grandchildren. In the weeks before he passed, he traveled to a first communion, a confirmation, and several baseball and lacrosse games despite his diminishing health due to cancer. His family truly was his greatest motivation and source of pride and happiness in his wonderful life. Ed lived in Hingham for the past 38 years, where he was active in his church, Resurrection Parish, serving as a lector and supporter for decades. His love of sports led him to be coach of several youth hockey teams over the years, including serving as President of the Hingham Youth Hockey Association. He enjoyed golfing at South Shore Country Club with friends and family, including his wife, Barbara. They traveled together to Florida and Europe, including many memorable trips to Ireland, the birthplace of his parents. Among all those he touched in all his travels and endeavors, Ed was always known as a role model and mentor. Notably, there are many who consider him to be like a father, and several who, in his last days, noted that they aspire to be half as good a man as Ed. In addition to many friends and colleagues, Ed is survived by his loving wife, Barbara, of almost 50 years, 13 grandchildren, and five children: Dennis Falvey of Centerville, Ellen Hollis and her husband Craig of Scituate, Paul Falvey and his wife Caryl of Hingham, Sheila Finnerty and her husband Tim of Hingham, and Brian Falvey and his wife Sandi of Wakefield. He is also survived by his brother, John Falvey and his wife Carol of Hingham, and was predeceased by his sister Mary McElaney of Melrose. Funeral from the McDonald Funeral Home SO. WEYMOUTH at 809 Main St (Rt.18 Opp. So. Sh. Hospital) Tues. at 9:00 A.M. Followed by a Funeral Mass in the Resurrection Church 1057 Main St. (Rt.228) in Hingham at 10:00 A.M. Interment Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford. Relatives and friends invited. Visiting hours in the funeral home Mon. 4-9 P.M. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Autism Speaks, 5455 Wilshire Boulevard, Suite 2250, Los Angeles, CA 90036. McDonald-funeralhomes.com

I am deeply saddened by the news of your loss. We all truly loved Mr. Falvey and loved you all as neighbors. Losing Ed is losing part of our family. We all loved his friendliness and great sense of humor. He was always there as a presence in our lives. He was a great role model as a neighborhood parent. I have very fond memories of times spent together as families growing up with you next door. I always looked forward on trips home from college, medical school and thereafter seeing the Falveys on my return. Ed was always there to welcome us back home to Hingham. I was honored he and Mrs Falvey drove to Ohio to attend my wedding. I am also grateful for the outpouring of support he and Mrs. Falvey provided our family in difficult times such as with my mother’s illness and death and on several other occasions. The memory of his life and his meaning in our lives will always be cherished and celebrated. Our love, support, and prayers are with you during this difficult time.

With the deepest sympathy,
Keith Kruithoff and family

"Big of heart and white of head, it must be our Uncle Ed. When times were bad, when times were good, he always right beside us stood. If there is one thing on which we're in the habit of relying.....it's Barbara and Ed making an effort and trying." The world has lost an amazing man who gave so much to others with a smile and real caring. He and my Aunt Barbara always went out of their way to show support...whether the occasion was a celebration or a difficulty. He had an incredible love for his kids and grandkids and his spirit will always live on in them because they share his loving, caring ways. God bless you Aunt Barbara and carry you over these difficult days. We love you.
