Donald Bates Obituary

Marshfield Donald Edward Bates, of Marshfield, resident for 25 years, May 23, 2008 age 72 at South Shore Hospital, Weymouth after a brief illness. Loving husband of Beatrice E. (Donohue). Born and raised in Medford, he graduated from Medford H.S., Northeastern University and Brown University Graduate School of Savings Banking. Donald was President of the Cohasset Savings Bank, retiring in 1994, served on the Board of Directors for SBLI, Town Assessor in Scituate, Advisory Board member in Scituate and Marshfield, member of the MA Army National Guard. He enjoyed wood carving, crocheting, golf and swimming. Devoted father of Kevin and his wife Lisa of Sandwich, Karen Macedo and her husband Michael of Marshfield, Kenneth and his wife Lisa of Marshfield, Kristin Podufaly and her husband Mitchell of Newton. Step-father of Michelle Giampietro and her husband Daniel of Scituate, Joseph Bolduc of NY and Nicole Bartlett of Marshfield. Brother of Barbara Smallidge of Durham, NH, Janet Duffy of Winchester, Robert W. Bates of NC, Richard W. Perry of Seekonk and the late David Bates. Also survived by 10 grandchildren and 4 step-grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren and 1 step-great-grandchild, many nieces, nephews and former wife Maureen Bates of Scituate. Son of the late G. Warren and Hylma (Poole) Bates. Visiting hours at Richardson-Gaffey Funeral Home, 382 First Parish Rd, Scituate on Tuesday, May 27 from 3-8 p.m. Funeral service on Wed. in Second Congregational Church, 43 Highland Ave, Cohasset at 10 a.m. followed by interment in Woodside Cemetery, Cohasset. At the familys request in lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Scituate Animal Shelter, P.O. Box 823, Scituate, MA 02066. For online guest book visit mem.com.
