Francis Golden Obituary

Scituate Francis Frank Golden of Scituate, May 28th, age 91. Loving husband of Marie (Betzmer). Frank was born in 1916 in Adams, MA and studied at the Museum of Fine Arts School in Boston (graduated, 1939). In that year, he traveled with a group of artists who had joined an artists union. Golden settled in Chicago, moved to NY, then CT and finally to MA. His professional career began in 1939, when Golden lived in New York City, and painted murals and the background on Salvador Dalis "The Dream of Venus" for the Worlds Fair. In 1940, he was a free-lance artist who earned a salary painting posters, and pots and pan for J.C. Penneys and his big break came in 1948 when he was chosen to illustrate for Colliers. In 1961, Goldens "Summer Race" was Time magazines announcement illustration for a new magazine, Sports Illustrated. Golden was hired by Sports Illustrated to paint hunting of upland birds and soon he was illustrating experience-oriented stories because editors consider the artist a storyteller in paint. Goldens paintings became illustrations for Saturday Evening Post and his sporting scene subjects were popular in Sports Illustrated (where he was voted one of the magazines top 10 artists of all time), Sports Afield, Grays Sporting Journal, Audubon, Colliers and other prestigious magazines. Devoted father of Peter and his wife, Janet of Woodbury, MN and Tony and his wife, Judy of Scituate. Loving grandfather of Ian, Jeremy, Elliot, Erin and Renee Golden. Sister of Elsie ONeil of Concord, NH. Also survived by two nephews. Funeral at the Richardson-Gaffey Funeral Home, 382 First Parish Rd., Scituate on Saturday, May 31st at 11AM. Visiting hours Friday from 4-8PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Scituate Animal Shelter, 61 Driftway, Scituate, MA 02066. Richardson-Gaffey Funeral Home (781) 545-0196

To the family of Francis Golden. None of you know me, but I was a friend of Frank's in the 1970's. We worked together for SI. I'm sorry this is so late, but I just now learned of his passing. He was a fine artist and person.
