Roger Brown Obituary

Duxbury Roger Whittemore Brown Jr., 89, of Duxbury, MA passed away peacefully at home on Friday, June 20, 2008. Roger was born Oct. 1, 1918 in Concord, MA. He graduated from Lexington High School in 1936, a tennis team member and soccer player. He then graduated from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst 1940, majoring in economics & dairying. Roger was the captain of the UMass Varsity Soccer team, a member of Lambda Chi Fraternity, the Outing club and an active alumni chairperson of the quin-quintennial reunions. After a brief employment at Hood Dairies, Roger proudly served in the Armys 10th Mountain Division in WW II in Italy. He continued to be an active member of the 10th. Following his military service he went into the family business, Roger W. Brown, Inc, Interstating Transportation & lived in West Medford, MA with his wife Anna Skeers Brown. After her death Roger moved to Kings Way, Yarmouthport, MA where he was an avid golfer and member of the Kings Way Golf Club. In 1994 Roger married Norma Grant of CT. They spent 11 happy years between Cape Cod and Florida with family & friends. They moved to The Village at Duxbury in 2005. Mr. Brown leaves his wife of 14 years, Norma Brown, Deborah and Steve Bowen family of Duxbury, Ralph Grant family of Mount Pleasant, SC, Elaine Grant, Easton, MD, his extended family: Herbert Gray of Bridgeville, DE, the Adolphson family of W. Newbury, MA & the Brown Schnare family of Worthington, MA, the Chris Brown family of Green River, VT, Patricia Brown Cummings of Bedford, Shirley Brown Howard of Westwood, Susan Stella Papalia of Andover, & Louis Stella Jr. of Melrose. A memorial service & celebration of his life will be held on July 13th at 11:30 am at The Pilgrim Church of Duxbury on Washington Street, immediately followed by a reception at The Village at Duxbury, 290 Kings Town Way, Duxbury, MA. Memorial contributions may be made to Cranberry Hospice, 36 Cordage Park Circle, Suite 326, Plymouth, MA, 02360 in appreciation of the loving care provided by their staff or to The UMASS Cape Cod Scholarship Fund,134 Hicks Way, Amherst, MA, 01003. Mr. Brown,
Sir, I would just like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice for our Country when you served with the U.S. Army in Europe during WW II as a member of the 10th Mountain Division fighting the Germans. And to your family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy. The 10th Mountain Division was one of the best trained units in the Army during the War and captured some of the most heavily defended German positions in Northern Italy during the War.
