George Casey Obituary

Hingham George Edward Casey, age 89, of Hingham, formerly of Cohasset, died Tuesday, June 24, 2008. George was born in Malden and was a graduate of Melrose High school, class of 1938. After working in Peru, VT, where he served in the Civilian Conservation Corps building the Hapgood Pond Recreation area, Mr. Casey enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1941, where he served as a cook on the battleship USS Texas and the USS Alchiba, an attack cargo ship. Mr. Casey served in the invasion of the Guadalcanal in August 1942. On July 4, 1944, George married Dorothea Oliver, who was the daughter of Cohasset Fire Chief Joseph Oliver and his wife Catherine. Mr. Casey was later honorably discharged from the US Navy and returned home, where he worked as the chef at the Scituate Cabin and Kimballs Restaurant before his appointment to the Cohasset Fire Dept. in February 1950. Mr. Casey was named Captain in June of 1957 and served until his retirement in 1980. Mr. Casey oversaw the Dorothea O. Casey Memorial Scholarship Fund at Cohasset High School after Dorotheas death in 1986. After his retirement, George enjoyed traveling to his seasonal home in Spring Hill, FL and a return to trip to Guadalcanal. During his retirement, Mr. Casey met Carol Meaney of Hingham and the two were later married on July 15, 1989. George was a member of the American Legion George H. Mealy Post 118, as well as the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9146, the Alchiba Veterans, and the Gaudalcanal Veterans. George is survived by his wife, Carol Meaney Casey. Mr. Casey was the loving father of George E. Casey Jr. of Paradise Valley, Az., and Debora A. Casey of Hingham. He was the stepfather of Andrea Gaudette of Natick, Mark Gaudette of Pembroke, and Alan Gaudette of Marshfield. He is also survived by his brother, Robert Casey of Melrose, and his grandchildren, Peter B. Casey of Atlanta, GA., Matthew R. Casey of New York, NY., and his step-grandchildren, Errol and Renee Gaudette, both of Pembroke, and Brian and Joel Gaudette both of Marshfield. A Graveside Service will be held on Friday, June 27 at 11 a.m. in Woodside Cemetery, Cohasset.
