Joseph Murphy Obituary

Braintree Joseph P. Murphy, age 81, Chief Marshall of the 2008 Evacuation (St. Patrick's) Day Parade, of Braintree, formerly of Milton and South Boston, died Saturday at his home. Mr. Murphy was a receipient of numerous citations and awards from public and veteran interest groups. His record of public service culminated with his appointment as Chief Marshall of the 2008 Evacuation (St. Patrick's) Day Parade. As Commander of T.J. Fitzgerald Post #561, Mr. Murphy spearheaded the effort to establish a World War II Veteran's Memorial for residents of South Boston. Mr. Murphy is survived by his wife of 48 years, Carol Jean (Ryan); his daughter Allison Murphy of Abington; his son Joseph Murphy and daughter-in-law Kristen of Quincy; three grandchildren Aidan, Quinn and Kiera Murphy; his sisters, Anna Murphy and Veronica Barrett of South Boston. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Visiting hours Wednesday, 4-8 p.m. at the O'Brien Funeral Home, 146 Dorchester Street, South Boston. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at Gate of Heaven Church, South Boston.
