Mary E. Holmes

Canton Mary E. (Gelpke) Holmes, of Canton, died Tuesday, July 8, 2008, at the Caritas Norwood Hospital after a lengthy illness. She was 80. Born on April 20, 1928 in Norwood, the daughter of the late Charles and Julia (Hall) Gelpke. She was raised and educated in Canton where she had been a life long resident. A graduate of Canton High School with the Class of 1945, she had been a cheerleader during her High School years, Mrs. Holmes also attended Bridgewater State College. Mrs. Holmes and her husband operated the Cedarview Filling Station in the Green Harbor section of Marshfield for many years. She was predeceased by her sister and 4 brothers. Mrs. Holmes is survived by her husband of 60 years, Warren H. Holmes, her daughter, Janice and her husband, Jay DaSilva of Holbrook and her sons, Gary Holmes of Canton and Randall Holmes of Enfield, CT. She is also survived by her 7 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. A Funeral Service in celebration of her life will be held at the United Church of Christ, 1541 Washington Street, Canton, Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours at the Roache - Pushard Family Funeral Home, 210 Sherman Street, CANTON, Friday from 4-8 p.m. Interment Canton Corner Cemetery.
