George Edward Noonan Jr.

George Noonan Obituary

Hingham George Edward Ed Noonan, Jr., born in Brockton, MA on Dec. 26, 1938, died July 11, 2008, peacefully in his home surrounded by his family after a two and a half year battle with kidney cancer. He was the beloved patriarch of a family of ten children and 25 grandchildren. He spent most of his childhood years living in West Bridgewater, MA where he graduated from high school. He subsequently attended Harvard College, graduating in 1960 with an A.B. in physics. In 1962, he received a masters degree in Economics from Georgetown University, and a few months later, his first child was born with his wife, Phyllis Ann Reddy of Dorchester, MA. His lifelong career in the investment industry began soon thereafter working as a security analyst at Connecticut Mutual, Advest and Fidelity Investments. In 1972, he bravely ventured out on his own and founded Contravisory Research and Management where he incorporated a quantitative and technical model which became the basis of his equity research and investment management recommendations. He was a member of The Boston Society of Security Analysts, The Institute of Financial Analysts, and The Market Technicians Association. He also held the Chartered Finanacial Analyst designation. Ed was a well known leader within the investment community. He proudly handed the business over to his sons in 2006. In an effort to provide a valuable education for his children, he co-founded the Montrose School for girls, in Medfield, MA, in 1979 and served as trustee until his death. He also co-founded Westbridge School for boys, formerly in Brighton, MA. In his leisure time, he enjoyed spending time on his boat, Stina Marie, but his greatest joy in life was the time he spent with his wife and family. Beloved husband of Phyllis Ann (Reddy) Noonan. Devoted father of Christine Reinemann of New Canaan, CT, Mary Elleen Patton of Barrington, RI, Michael Noonan of Sandwich, Philip Noonan of Marshfield, William Noonan of Scituate, Elizabeth Daly of Hanson, Katherine Russo of Port Washington, NY, Margaret Noonan of Weymouth, Pauline Studebaker of Chicago, IL, and Joseph Noonan of Weymouth. Loving grandfather of 25 grandchildren. Son of Christine (Newquist) Noonan of Hingham and the late George E. Noonan Sr. Brother of Elizabeth Lukens of Newton. Visiting hours in the SOUTH WEYMOUTH McDonald Funeral Home at 809 Main St. (Rte. 18 opposite South Shore Hospital) Monday from 4:00-8:00 P.M Funeral Mass in the Resurrection Church, Hingham at 10:00 Oclock. I was Ed's freshman roomate at college and just learned of his passing in the alumni magazine. Ed visited me about 15 years ago for what was supposed to be a marketing visit but turned into about a two hour discussion of our families and and our life experiences. My knowledge of and experiences with the "young" Ed leads me to believe that he led a life of joy,responsible achievements and love of family. I hope that this memory of an old friend brings some comfort to the family.

Dear Phyllis and Family,
I was sorry to hear about the passing of Ed. I am Martin "Joe" Noonan's son.Unfortunately I have not seen any of you in many years. Very likely not since my father's passing some 20+ year's ago. I do remember you Phyllis and Ed and of course Uncle George and Aunt Stina from the early years. And reading the obituary gave me the opportunity to appreciate how accomplished Ed was and how much he contributed to people. My thoughts are with you.....Richard Noonan.

To The Noonan Family,

As you know, Ed has been coming to our firm, Alex. Brown, for many, many years. I can say that the Baltimore Office has been blessed with knowing him and listening intently to his recommendations. Ed had the most wonderful manner, thoughtful and valuable insights, and was always respected and admired. What a wonderful human being, and great role model for his family and friends. We miss him dearly.

Noonan Boys, very sorry to read of your loss. I first met your Dad in the 70’s when some of you were in a camp I ran at Wescott. We stayed in touch over the years through courses and the investment business. He was a terrific example of a faithful husband and a devoted father while being the consummate professional. It was great to read that he passed the business on to you. When you are in Philly please look me up. Phyllis and girls please accept my condolences and know that you are in my prayers.

Bill, Colleen and kids,
I was so saddened to hear about your dad/father-in-law/grandfather. Although he was sick, and he is now at peace, I'm sure the loss is deeply felt, particularly as he seems to have been such an incredibly inspirational man. I hope that you can find peace in the memories that you have of him and in the support from your friends and family. Please let us know if there is anything we can do to help.
With love and sympathy. We will keep you in our prayers.

Phil & Mal; Bill & Coleen;, Mrs. Noonan & the rest of the Noonan family;
We were so very sorry to hear about Mr. Noonan. Having the privilege to know Mr. Noonan for so many years (from Rob and Phil's days at St. A's), it was ironic and exciting to have Bill and Coleen move across the street and allow us to see much more of the entire Noonan family. As my father often said, if you leave this world with your family and reputation in good order, you will be defined as a success. Mr. Noonan was a true success in all that he set out to do in life. It's nice to know that they are wearing bow ties in heaven. Thinking of you.
