Claire Rowe Obituary

Marshfield Claire Bingham Rowe died on July 29, 2008 two days after her 93rd birthday at her Old Rexhame, Marshfield home where she had resided for 51 years. She died surrounded by her loving family after a 6 month battle with cancer. She was born in Norwood, MA and lived in various other communities such as Watertown, NY, W. Palm Beach, FL and Carlisle, PA during her childhood, communities where her father Clarence Bingham served as the first city manager. She graduated from Norwood High and attended Boston University where she majored in social work. She worked for Jordan Marsh in the 1930s and modeled for them as well. Shortly after starting a career in social work she met her husband to be. She described their meeting as love at first sight. She married Charles W. Rowe of Stamford, CT, a chemical engineer who earned his degree from NYU. They started a family and moved where his work took him. She was a homemaker, did volunteer work and, in later years, became a greeter at Willis Henry Auctions. She was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, who passed away in 1984. Claire was active in the community. She served as President of the Marshfield Womans Club in the late 60s, and won prizes for her flower arrangements as a member of the Garden Club. She took great pride in having served on the Taylor Fund Committee, which helps Marshfield residents. In more recent years she participated in the North River Arts Festival and enjoyed the lectures at the North River Community League. She gave of her time and talent to the First Congregational Church of Marshfield. Claire greatly enjoyed traveling and had visited many continents during her lifetime. She touched the lives of her many friends as well her family. She will continue to live in their hearts. She is survived by her sons Charles, wife Lorna, of Mariposa, CA; Jeffrey, wife Cheryl, of Plainville, MA; and daughter Karel Henry, husband Willis, of Pembroke, MA. In addition she leaves her grandchildren: Katherine Ogilvie and her children Audrey, Felina and Owen; Madelyn Mcgrath and her children Flint and Dulcie of all of Mariposa CA; Douglas Rowe of Jersey City, NJ; Bradford Rowe and her great-grandchild Xavier Rowe of Los Angeles, CA; Tyler B. Henry of Philadelphia, PA and Caleb Henry of Pembroke, MA. Memorial arrangements will be private. Donations in her memory may be sent to The Nathaniel Taylor Fund, Inc. c/o Sheila Atwater, P.O. Karel, thanks for sharing your Mom with me on occasion. She was very special to me and I will miss her. I could always count on her for a smile and a hug when I needed one. Even at my age, with grandchildren, she treated me like a daughter who needed her love and support. She was one special lady. My deepest sympathies to all of you.
