Lester Phillips Obituary

Plymouth Lester Eugene Phillips went home to be with the Lord on August 2, 2008, in Plymouth, MA at the age of 85 with his family by his side. Born in Somerville, MA on January 5, 1923, he was the first son of Leo and Maude Phillips. A 1941 graduate of Somerville High School, he attended Tufts College in Medford, CT. A proud member of the greatest generation of WWII, he served in the South Pacific and fought in the Battle of Okinawa. He was a member of both the 54th Naval Division and 6th Marine Division for three years serving as a Pharmacist Mate First Class. His business career spanned 40 years as a retail executive beginning in Boston, many years with Sheridans Department Stores in Quincy and Braintree, and culminating at Kline Brothers Department Stores in New York City where he was responsible for 25 stores throughout the Midwest. Lester was an active member of the VFW Post 1822 of Plymouth serving as a member of the board of directors. He was a parishioner of the Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha Church and a member of the American Legion. He is survived by his loving wife of fifty-eight years, Madelyn Glendon Phillips of Plymouth, a daughter Cheryl Doherty of Plymouth, and two sons, Thomas Phillips of Glastonbury, CT, and Gerard Phillips of Milford, CT. Two daughters-inlaw, Elsie Phillips and Janet Phillips, eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and a brother Robert Phillips of Framingham. He is pre-deceased by a son-in-law, Richard Doherty of Plymouth. The funeral will take place on Wednesday morning, August 6th at 9:00 a.m. from the Cartmell Funeral Home, 150 Court St., Plymouth followed by a Mass of Christian Buria l at the Church of Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha in West Plymouth at 10: 00 a.m. Internment with full military honors to follow at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne. Friends and relatives may call at Cartmell Funeral Home in Plymouth from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 5th. Donations may be made in Lesters memory to the Macular Degeneration Foundation, P.O. Box 531313, Henderson, NV 89053.

Mr. Phillips,
Sir, I would just like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice for our Country when you served as a U.S. Navy Corpsman in the Pacific during WW II-especially at Okinawa-the bloodiest battle in the Pacific. God knows how many Marines' lives you saved. And to your family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy.
