Richard Leahy Obituary

NORWELL Richard A. Leahy, 83, formerly of Norwell and Hingham passed away peacefully on August 14, 2008 in Charlotte, NC after a lengthy battle with multiple illnesses. He is survived by his loving wife (roommate) of 57 years Rose Ellen (Griffin) Leahy; son Thomas G. Leahy of Charlotte, NC; daughter-in-law Kelly L. Leahy and granddaughters Amelia Grace and Caroline Claire also of Charlotte. He was predeceased in death by his parents Augustine R. and Catherine B. Leahy and his brother Thomas. He was a graduate of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, Suffolk University Law School and Boston University Law School and served in the USN-R achieving the rank of Commander. Mr. Leahy was active in his community serving on the Norwell Advisory Board, Board of Selectmen and as a Library Trustee. Additionally, he was a past Chairman of the Thayer Academy Board of Trustees and the Massachusetts Maritime Academy Foundation. An avid reader, he was a member of the International Churchill Society and along with Posey, traveled worldwide to many gatherings of the group. Mr. Leahy spent many years with State Street Bank and Trust as well as David L. Babson Inc. in Boston. He also served as a private trustee for many entities as well. In addition to the Churchill Society, he was a member of St. Helens Parish in Norwell, The American Bar Association, The Scituate Harbor Yacht Club, The University Club of Boston and several other organizations. Funeral Mass on Monday at 10:30 a.m.in St. Helen Church, 383 Washington St., Rte 53 in Norwell. Interment in Washington Street Cemetery. Visiting hours in the Sullivan Funeral Home, 551 Washington St., Rte 53 in HANOVER on Sunday from 6-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to either the Norwell Visiting Nurses Association and Hospice (91 Longwater Drive, Norwell, MA 02061) or the Massachusetts Maritime Academy Foundation 101 Academy Drive, Buzzards Bay, MA 02532). Dear Mrs. Leahy and Tom, my condolences and sympathies. Mr. Leahy was a good man who was always willing to help others and provide guidance to those who sought it. I regularly recall his assistance with both my Eagle Scout project and his help with my attending MMA. Our thoughts and prayers go out to you.
