Stanford Worrell Obituary

Weymouth Stanford J. Worrell, age 88, of Weymouth, died Friday, August 15, 2008 at the Radius Specialty Hospital Quincy after a brief illness. Mr. Worrell was born in Sprott, Alabama, raised and educated in Bibb County, AL. He had lived in Weymouth for the last 48 years, previously living in Quincy for 13 years. He was a 20 year United States Navy Veteran having served during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. He retired in 1960 with the rank of Electricians Mate First Class. He served aboard the USS Gregory, USS Antietam, USS Tarawa, USS Iowa, and USS Wasp. He was a survivor on the September 5, 1942 sinking of the USS Gregory in the South Pacific. He received the Presidential Unit Citation, U.S. Artic Expedition Medal, European African Middle Eastern Area Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign, World War II Victory Medal, Philippine Liberation, Navy Occupation Service Medal, and National Defense Service Medal. After retiring from the US Navy, he worked at Boston Edison for 22 years as a substation operator and retired many years ago. Mr. Worrell was a member of the A.P.D. Fourstacks, Fleet Reserve, and the George F. Bryan Post of Quincy. Beloved husband for 61 years of Theresa B. (Veno) Worrell. Devoted father of Sandra Clifford and her husband Michael of Weymouth, Janet Worrell of Weymouth, Debra Egan and her husband Paul of Weymouth, Barbara Chaisson and her husband Richard of Pembroke, and the late Alyce Stewart. Loving grandfather of Paul Stewart and his wife April of Georgia, Tara and Katie Egan, and Joe and Alye Chaisson. Great-grandfather of Gage and Porter Stewart. Brother of Napoleon Worrell, Betty Jean Worrell both of Alabama, the late Willie Lou Nichols, the late Marguerite Barnett, the late J.C. Worrell, the late Lela Rose, the late Josephine Wilson, and the late Charles Lindberg Worrell. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be conducted at the Old South Union Congregational Church, 25 Columbian Street, Weymouth, Thursday, August 21st at 10 oclock. Reverend Jennifer Barrett Siegal will officiate. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting Hours at the Sweeney Brothers Home for Funerals, 1 Independence Ave., Quincy Wednesday 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Interment Old North Cemetery, Weymouth. For those who wish, donations in Mr. Worrells memory may be made to the Quincy Medical Center, Attention: Development Office, 144 Whitwell St., Quincy, MA 02169.

Mr. Worrell,
Sir, I would just like to say thank you for your years of dedicated service and sacrifice for our Country when you served in the USN-especially during WW II, the Korean and Vietnam Wars. You helped hold the line and turn the tide of WW II in the Pacific fighting Japanese in the Fall of 1942 when our Country was holding on to Guadalcanal by our fingernails. And to your family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy.
