Matthew Cardoza Obituary

KINGSTON Matt went home to God after a short illness. August 25, 2008. He was born in Boston, June 7, 1922 to Matthew E. and Martha Kelley Cardoza. He was raised in Boston and Winthrop, MA, graduated from Roxbury Memorial High School. He enlisted in the U. S. Army serving during WWII, then went on to earn his Masters from Boston University and Doctorate of Education from University of Massachusetts. He taught school in Whitman and began the first Distributive Education Class in the state in Fitchburg. He worked for the State of Vermont Education Dept., Commonwealth of Mass Educated Dept. and retired from the Department of Health, Education and Welfare in Washington, D.C., serving as a budget analyst. He is pre-deceased by his wife of 59 years, Grace Cady Cardoza who he met at a USO dance. Beloved father of five daughters, Carol Kennedy and her husband Michael of Hull, June O'Connell and her husband Robert of Bridgewater, Joan Cardoza of Pembroke, Joyce Duhaine and her husband Richard of Hanson and Deborah Cavanagh and her husband Michael of Hanover. He was the adored Papa of 9, Great Papa of 12. He is also survived by his brother Robert "Buddy" of Peoria, AZ and Marion Thurston of Lakeville, CT and many nieces and nephews. Matt and Grace raised the family in Hanover, spending the last 25 years in Kingston. Matt was a Past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus, Cardinal Cushing Council, Pembroke/Hanover. He was a Fourth Degree Knight, Cardinal Spellman Council, Whitman, where he was the Burser and a member of the 4th Degree Honor Guard. He was a charter member and Past Exalted Ruler of the Hanover Elks Lodge, then became a life member of the Marshfield Elks Lodge. In earlier years he was a call Firefighter for Hanover Company 1, North Hanover, Usher at St. Mary of the Sacred Heart Church, Hanover, and with the late Dr. Ernest Crowley, initiated the Hanover Citizens Scholarship Foundation. He enjoyed spending summers in Belgrade Lakes, Maine, where he built his summer cottage with the help of his good friend Charlie Boterf. Funeral Mass on Friday at 10 a.m. in Holy Family Church, 601 Tremont St., Rte. 3A in Duxbury. Interment in Mayflower Cemetery in Duxbury.
