George Howe Obituary

FREDERICKSBURG, VA George W. Howe, 92, of Fredericksburg, VA, died Sunday, September 21, 2008 at Mary Washington Hospital. Born in Boston, MA, Mr. Howe retired from the United States Marine Corps in 1955. He served in both World War II and the Korean War, receiving numerous citations including the Bronze Star for distinguished service. He then served as a commercial banker and civil servant. Among his achievements, he received a battlefield commission in the Korean War and retired as a captain. He retired from federal civil service in 1972. Mr. Howe served as a past chairman of the Stafford County Planning Commission. He was a member of the Marine Corps Association, the Marine Corps Distinguished Shooters Association, the China Marines Association, the Thomas Jefferson Institute and Americans United for the Separation of Church and State. He was a published author. His writings include Tales By A Few Good Marines and Grandma, Where Do Stories Come From?. Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Zora M. Howe; daughter, Dawn M. Skinner and her husband, John of Port Royal, VA; son, George W. Howe, Jr. and his wife Lara of Great Falls, VA; grandchildren, Rebecca Utley of Myrtle Beach, SC, John G. Kent and his wife Cheryl of Richardsville, VA, Dr. Diana M. Almy and her husband, Robb of Corbin, VA, Christopher Howe of Richmond, VA, Alexander Howe of Aberdeen, MD; step granddaughter, Tammy Berfield and her husband, Rex of Stafford, VA, great grandchildren, Tyler Kent, Luke Kent, Robert Almy IV, Jack Almy, Nolan Almy, step great grandchildren, Jeniffer Berfield and Alyssa Berfield; his nieces, Virginia Dodd and her husband, Jim, Dorothy Quarles and her husband, Dan and Judi Hardin and her husband Cliff; and his beloved caretakers, Tammy Treakle, Tammy Atkins and Edith Henderson. A Funeral Service will be held at 2 pm, Friday, September 26 at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel with the Rev. Robb Almy officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Capt. Howe,
Sir, as a fellow Marine I would just like to say thank you for your years of dedicated service and sacrifice for our Country when you served in the USMC-especially during WW II and the Korean War as well as being a "China Marine." It was the history and accomplishments made by you and your fellow Marines back then that all of us Marines who followed in your footsteps have always tried to live up to. And to your family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy.
