Hey Walter,
I got an email alert that your on-line condolence book was going to go offline. I used to work at the Long Island Shelter from 1989 to 1996 and always remember when you worked the Detail there. you almost always brought coffee and donuts and it was great listening to your stories. You told me how you worked with my Uncle Dennis when he was with BPD. I left to Massachusetts to join the Border Patrol in 1996 and from time I'd call you and you were always very encouraging. I remember when I started collecting Law Enforcement patches and you got a bunch of your students to bring in patches to mail down to me! The last time I saw you was in 2006 and it just pure coincidence! I was home on Emergency because my Mother was in the hospital and my Uncle Dennis passed away. When I went to the funeral home in Weymouth for the Wake you were working there as a usher. It sure was nice to see you and talk to you even under those circumstances. Well I gotta get going because I'm at work but before I go I would just like to say thank you for your years of dedicated service and sacrifice-first for our Country when you served with the U.S. Army shortly after World War II and later for the citizens of Boston when you served with the BPD. And to your Family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy.

To the Fahey Family, I am so sorry to hear of Walter's passing. I didn't find out until today, otherwise I would been there in person to offer my condolences. Walter was a great guy, and fine role model to the youth of Dorchester. He was one of the best guys I ever met, and I was
honored to have him as my friend. I had the privilege of working with both Walter, and Gerard with the Carney Hospital Security Staff. He will be missed. You and your family are in our Prayers.

Dear Marie and Family, I was so sorry to hear about Walter's death. One of my friends saw the article in the Boston Globe and saw my Dad (Frank Venuti) mentioned in the article and called asking me if my Dad had a partner named Walter Fahey and I said yes, why and then she told me that he has passed away. I was so saddened to hear this as he was always a great friend and partner of my Dad's and when my Dad got Alzheimers he was so wonderful helping me and my husband Dave sort through things and help us along with his sons clean out his house. I coudlnt have gotten it done with out his help. He was a wonderful person and I will never forget him. You and your children and granchildren have lost one of the best.... my love,

To the Fahey Family:
I met Walter as an instructor at the Plymouth Police Academy in 2001 when I returned to police work after 20 years practicing law. Walter taught community policing and diversity, but most of all reminded us of our humanity. I now teach at the academy and lecture at Cape Cod Community College. Every class on community policing starts with: "let me tell you about Walter Fahey..."

To Marie and The Fahey Family-

On behalf of the Harrington Family we send our deepest condolences. Walter was a very dear and treasured friend of our mother, Nancy Harrington. When she passed away in February, Walter was a tremendous comfort to us nine Harrington children during a very difficult time. He also was a source of strength to my mom when our dad passed away in 2000. We will never forget his compassion and kindness. He was truly an honorable and generous man. Without a doubt he will be greatly missed.

I am deeply saddened by the loss of Walter Fahey. He was a great man as well as a funny man. Although I lost touch with The Fahey's over the years, the memories of Cotton St and the time I spent at their house will be cherished. Even though I only lived on Cotton St for four years, I still went back after moving. I think I slept at their house more than my own. It is where I feel I spent my whole childhood We might have been the last of the kids to feel safe when we went out at night. The Fahey's made me feel like a part of their family and I truly appreciate that. I too have told my own kids stories of Mr Fahey and the whole clan. My thoughts and prayers are with your family

Dearest Marie and Family -- how saddened MiMi and I are that Walter is not here on this earth with us -- MiMi and I share in your loss, and you are in our prayers. However, we celebrate his life, and I know he is still showering upon all of us his love, laughter and his sincere religious belief for the greatest commandment -- Love God with your whole heart, mind and spirit and love your neighbor as yourself. He exemplified this in his life.

MiMi and I have been blessed with Walter's friendship that was created at St. Margaret's Hospital when he and Frank would come into the cafeteria for quick nourishment. He is just a hearbeat away -- our memories of Walter will always bring us joy -- his example of goodness touched us deeply, and we hope to continue to reach out to people and spread his legacy.

Thank you Walter for being there for us during the good and bad times. You will live on forever in our hearts. We love you, Walter,

Christine and MiMi XOXO Bradenton, FL

Marie, remember Walter's first encounter with Hospice when you were here in Bradenton? He accompanied MiMi in the middle of the night on one of her housecalls , and the rest is history !

I was sad to hear of Walter's passing. I met him ONCE- when he came to Norwood looking for a bad guy. We spent about an hour together and he told stories of my Dad (who was very much like him) who he knew from 20 years before. He was everything a good policeman should be. My sympathy to the entire Fahey family but my envy too. You were so blessed to have him.

To the Fahey Family,

I was saddened to hear about the loss of Mr.Fahey. For me, growing up on Cotton St was a safe haven, because Officer Fahey was a few houses away. It was comforting for a little kid to know they could trust that everyone in their neighborhood would be safe from crime, because of him. He was the neighborhood hero. I would tell teachers that "Officer Friendly" whom we talked about in class, lived up the street from me. He was extremely kind and I remember him being a giving neighbor, always willing to help others. It has been years since I've seen him or the Fahey's but have thought of you all throughout the years. I am sure he has a lot of catching up to do with Nana Fahey up there. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

Hugs,

In 1987 when I was a rookie....sent to Uphams Corner on my second day in my shiny leather coat, I wondered block to block until Walter pulled up. "Get in Kid". He was loud and cheerful and full of advice. You couldn't help but listen as he told stories but always stressed the proper part of policing which is the helping of others...it is why most of us signed up. He took me to St. Margaret's hospital for lunch(typical cop happy with cafeteria food). All the workers greeted him and I was still uncomfortable with being a cop and people staring at me. Seeing Walter I quickly learned that running for mayor was possible even in uniform. He was the first to chip in when the family on Sumner St had all their Christmas toys stolen 2 days before Christmas after a B&E. The troops at station 11 bought toys and Walter like Santa Clause delivered the goods(good things that are done without public recognition ) Weeks later he kidnapped me took me to Ventura St and started ringing the air horn at 11:00 am in the middle of the street. Again I was horrified thinking people will be looking at us in the middle of the street no traffic just the siren and air horn. An elderly woman came to the picture window and waved and we waved back and drove off. He stated her house was broken into 6 months ago and he told her he would check on her. Again teaching the new kid without saying a word. We lived on Neponset Av and I often had to take my sick father to the doctors. One day my mom and I were trying to carry him down the stairs to make an appointmentand like an angel sent from heaven Walter appeared out of nowhere, cruiser parked in the middle of the street. Mission accomplished even putting a smile on a dying old mans face. I could go on and on but now I'm crying just thinking of you big fella.....you were a teacher a preacher a father a friend......race did not matter even during those hard years of racial divide. You make me proud to be a police officer standing for the little guy.......altough I would kid you about my ears being big enough and listening to one more story would give me cauliflower ear you would stop and just as I would go to leave you would grab me and tell me one more. Grabing my arm and saying listen, listen.....come here come here......and ten more minutes would go by. I was always glad you did and oh how I would love to hear about the union or the riots or teaching at Plymouth one more time.......then again somehow I here you in my own words when the new kids come into the station. I continue to try to pay it forward as you did for me....I thank you I love you and hope to see you on the otherside...a life well lived and a reason to celebrate.......say hello to my dad

To The Family,

Walter was truly a great man. Being a Dorchester resident for almost 25 years, I remember the racial strife when the neighborhood changed colors. Walter's color never changed, because he was no color. He reached out and touched everyone, regardless of color. His spirit transcended skin pigment. As an African-American, I can say without hesitation, that he was my brother and my friend. The only thing I will miss is seeing him, because his legacy will remain a fixture in the hearts and minds of the people of Dorchester and all who cared about this great community and love it as he did.

Deepest sympathy to the Fahey family from all of us at the Brant Rock Market. We are all going to miss
Walter's "stories" and jokes. He was
a great man and so very funny.
I really enjoyed when he let me

of them) of his carreer as a Boston
Police Officer. It was truly amazing.
He will be sorely missed at the

To the whole family,

It is hard for me to know where to begin, but I believe it was 35+ years ago when I first met Mark, Stephen, Billy, and the family. I was taken in immediately as one of the family. Wally and Mrs. Fahey were like second parents to me and to this day I still consider the kids like brothers and sister to me. Wally was the funniest person I ever met. He had a million stories and amazingly they were all true.

I will miss him and remember him forever.

To all the members of the Fahey family:

It was with sadness that I read of Walters passing. Yet as I searched for this guest book, I came across an article and interview from 2005 just prior to his retiring from the PD. It was a nice recitation of his career. I recall the pride that I had knowing all the wonderful things he accomplished during those years. Walter certainly touched many people through his work and made lasting impressions on more people than most of us would hope to influence. All the previous entries on this page, and those to come, are evidence of that. I remember him as a neighbor and great friend to my family. It is a testament that nearly 30 years after moving from that house next door, my memories of Walter and the entire Fahey family are something I relate to my own family with great fondness. I am certain that I speak for my entire family when I say Thank You. For the hospice shown to my mom (Peggy), for the values of friendship taught to your sons (Michael and I still recall "time out, car coming, move the nets"). Tami, I think my sister Elaine would have been lost in that neighborhood of boys without you as her friend.
Walter spent many years preserving the types of neighborhoods we grew up in. So when the Streetlights come on, everyone needs to come in...or in those days, when Marie called for her kids from the porch, everyone went home.

To all the members of the Fahey family. Walter was a legend of a man. As a cop he possessed all of the qualities of greatness. He could have been many things but he dedicated his life to service for others. I met Walter 25 years ago as a rookie cop in Milton. I am priviledged to have had such a wonderful relationship for all these years. His words of inspiration and guidance sit with me each day as Chief of Police in Milton. God has called Walter home for a well deserved reward. He now watches over those who had such faith in him.

To the Family and Friends of Walter:

I was deeply saddened to learn of Walter's death but it is obvious that God wanted him Home with Him, and in what I feel sure, is a very special place reserved just for him.

I had the good fortune and good luck to have had the opportunity of working with Walter for many years and his family can take comfort and solace in knowing that he was an officer who always reflected great credit on the Boston Police Department, his family and himself.

I pray that he now Rests in Peace. And Walter, until we meet again, my dear friend, May God Hold You in the Palm of His Hand.

To the Fahey family,

My deapest sympathy on the loss of Walter. I am a detective with the Brookline Police Department. I first met Walter approximately 25 years ago. He was a credit to the Boston Police Department. Walter's philosophy was to always treat people the way that you want to be treated and secondly always put yourself in the other persons shoes. This has been my philospophy during my entire career and should be the most important thing taught to every police officer. Walter was truely a role model and mentor. He will be truely missed

I remember the first time I met you Wally and you showed me you famous wall from your days at the BPD going down to the basement. ( I never met someone who could talk so much! Haha) That was the first time I ever thought I would want to be a police officer because I saw how much love and compassion you had for the job. That really spilled over into your family life, and I am so honored to have known you and for you to have given me a second chance at having another grandfather after my own two had passed away. You were really an inspriation to my life and though the BDP didn't work out for me...I still try and bring the same love and compassion that you had for it to my daily life and job. I will really miss your funny stories, and hearing your voice! It gives me comfort to know you are looking down on us all from above.

You step granddaughter, Heather :-)

Dad
I don't even know where to begin....You were my rock, my best friend and I have learned so much from you as a person and as a father. I can only hope that I can be half the father to Dahlia and Gavin as you were to me. I will never let them forget you. I still cannot believe that your are gone but you will never be forgotten in my heart. Thank you for providing me with such wonderful memories. I love you dad!!!!!!!!!

I ministered with Walter many times when he was a hospice volunteer. His love for the sick and suffering gave many people hope, the hope of God's love as he reassured many that they were not alone. We now have a good friend on the "other side" who will continue praying for us. The greatest gift that Walter gave to others was the gift of himself. He never held back. I want to thank God for the life of Walter. His life made a difference, a big difference to us all. "Well done good servant of the Lord...now welcome home into your new life". Until we meet again Walter...

Walter was an absolute LEGEND.
He will be sorely missed, but he taught scores of Boston Police Officers how to carry and conduct themselves.

May God Bless his family.

It is always a very sad time when you attend a wake or a funeral but when Walter was at the door he always brought a smile to your face and had a story or two that put you in a much better mood. He will be missed by everyone who knew him.

Dear Fahey Family,

I have such fond memories! I am very saddened to hear the news of Mr. Fahey's passing. Mr. Fahey running around "the Arbs" in all kinds of weather and yelling to say hello is a fabuluos memory among so many. I so appreciate these many memories.

Mr. Fahey, I thank you very much for being a great influence in my life. Your were such a fine role model. Mrs. Fahey, thank you also for being so very kind to me as a child. It means so very much. Stephen, Billy, Mark, Andy, Tami, and Gerry I also thank you all for being TRULY great friends and influences in my life.

I share many great Fahey stories with my sisters, wife and others. Mr. Fahey and the Fahey legacy continues to march forward.

Walter,
I just want to say it was always a pleasure when you were serving on the detail at the Long Island Homeless Shelter back when I worked there in the 1990's. You had a million stories and always treated everyone the same. Also, I would just like to say thank you for your years of dedicated service and sacrifice-first for our Country when you served in the U.S. Army and secondly for the citizens of Boston when you served with the BPD. And to your family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy.

Dad
You taught me so much about love, life, and most importantly, family. I love you and miss you.

To all posting and viewing here,
Thank you for your kind words to my family and for paying your respects to my dad. The best way to celebrate Wally's life is to care for those less fortunate, to cherish each new day, to hug your loved ones tighter, and laugh as often and as hard as you can.

To the Fahey family,
I remember your dad at the South Boston Savings Bank doing details. He was a permanent fixture there. A hard working guy always polite
and always had a story to tell about my dad, Frank Di Fazio they were partners a long , long time ago. These were BOSTON'S
finest, no doubt. Loyal, classy and great family men. I remember seeing Mr. Fahey at Mc Donald's (his retirement job) he remembered me even though he didn't see me in over five years. I can't help thinking of my father as soon as I saw him. A great man, a great role model. We will miss Walter.

The Passing of Walter Fahey is indeed a sad time for his family and I extend my condolence to all of his Family as well as all of the people who had the privilege and honor of having known him. I was lucky enough to work with Walter at the Carney where he was a legend. Many a night was spent listening to Walter’s stories and Jokes………….”Eric, did I ever tell you this one????” I would probably tell him I had, but he would probably tell it anyways, and it seemed to be better than the first time. We are all the lucky ones for knowing him. Thanks for the memories Walter.
