Daniel Swan Obituary

QUINCY Dr. Daniel Mason Swan, 98, of Quincy, a prominent longtime Cardiologist and Chief of Staff at the former Quincy City Hospital, now Quincy Medical Center, died peacefully at his home on November 8, 2008. He was the beloved husband of 63 years to the late Pauline G. Swan, who passed away on February 10th of this year. Born in Watertown, NY, he was one of three children born to the late Mason M. and Carol (Brimmer) Swan. He graduated Colgate University in 1931, and the University of Rochester in 1935. He made his home in Quincy for more than 60 years. Dr. Swan maintained his practice for more than 50 years at Quincy City Hospital, retiring in 1998 at the age of 88. A Fellow of the American College of Physicians, he is also a longtime member of the American College of Cardiology, and the Dorchester Physicians Club. He has been elected to the Whos Who of Cardiology. He is also a longtime Mason, and member of Rural Lodge, Quincy, as well as a member of the Neighborhood Club. An outdoorsman, Dr. Swan reveled in the time spent sailing his 42 foot sailboat, the Jolly Polly, well into his 80s. He also enjoyed downhill skiing and bicycling. He participated in downhill ski races into his mid 80s. Devoted father of Jonathan Gaines Swan of Canton, Daniel Brimmer Swan of Hopedale, Carolyn Salisbury Swan of Hudson, NH, and Nancy Margaret Swan of Portsmouth, NH. Cherished grandfather of Aaron, Andrew, Taryn, Emily and Jeannette Swan, & Jennifer Swan Collado, and adoring great-grandfather of Mia Collado. He was sadly preceded in death by his son, the late David Packer Swan in 2001, and by his grandson, the late Matthew Swan, in 2003. His funeral, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be held on Wednesday in the First Baptist Church of Wollaston, 81 Prospect Ave., Wollaston, at 10:00 A.M, with the Rev. C. Michael Cunningham, Pastor, officiating. Interment will follow at Blue Hill Cemetery, Braintree. Visiting hours Tuesday from 58 P.M. at the Hamel, Wickens & Troupe Funeral Home, 26 Adams St. Quincy Center. We will always remember Doc Swan as a wonderful person, neighbor and friend. Our visits on his cottage porch were always meaningful and he will be missed as well as the rest of his family who have gone before him. What an awesome man and we loved him so much.
