Robert Johnson Obituary

Robert S. Johnson HINGHAM Robert S. "Bob" Johnson, of Hingham, age 65 , passed away on Thursday, December 11, 2008, after a brief battle with cancer. Bob fought this disease in the same way he lived his life - with optimism, hard work, and good humor, and with the family he cherished by his side. The son of the late Burton M. and Barbara (Swig) Johnson. Bob was born and raised in Newton, MA, five houses away from his high school sweetheart and future wife of 42 years, Karen (Stone). He graduated from Newton High and received both his Undergraduate and Masters degrees from Tufts University. He spent seven years as a social studies teacher in Newton before starting Century Mailing Company, a direct mail processing firm, with his father and brother, Donald. All three of Bob's children later joined the family business, which he owned and operated for thirty-five years. Bob was the quintessential family man. His wife, children, and grandchildren were his true passions in life. He also found great joy in contributing to the Hingham community; a longtime resident, Bob was a member of multiple PTO boards and coached countless youth athletic teams. Bob will be dearly missed by his loving family, his devoted wife Karen, his loving children, Richard Johnson and his wife Mindy; Nancy (Johnson) Holtschlag and her husband Michael; and Deborah Johnson, all of Hingham. Brother of Donald C. Johnson and his wife Lynne (Marcus) of Chestnut Hill. Cherished grandfather of Anna, Jacob, Paige, and Benjamin Holtschlag and Danielle Johnson, all of Hingham. Funeral Services will be private. Friends and family are welcome to attend a Memorial Service at the Meeting House, Old Ship Church, 90 Main Street, Hingham, on Saturday, December 20, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. to celebrate Bob's life. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Robert S. Johnson Endowment Fund c/o Wilder Memorial Nursery School, 666 Main Street, Hingham, MA 02043. Arrangements were completed by the Pyne Keohane Funeral Home, Hingham. Call 1-800-Keohane or see www.Keohane.com for online condolences.

To the entire Johnson family,

My deepest sympathy goes out to all of you.

Bob was one of the first people I met in the Direct Mail industry outside of my company. He was kind, honest, and a true gentleman.

He loved his family, and was not afraid to share that!

I will never forget his voice, nor the sight of his office in Brockton with the candles burning.

My thoughts are with you,

Patricia DePietro

Thoughts and prayers are with you all. Bob and I sat on the Greater Boston PCC executive board for the last few years. He always thought of me when a business opportunity came his way and I will always be grateful to him for that. His contribution to the PCC and friendship to us all will be greatly missed. May you find strength and peace during this sad time.

Karen, Nancy, Ricky, Debbie and family,

Bob will always be remembered in our hearts as a rivalry that turned into a great friendship. The good old days in Hingham Little League, Hingham Babe Ruth and Gals were the best. Bob made a great contribution to the town of Hingham as he inspired the teams he coached to always reach for the next level. We appreciated him. He will be sadly missed and always remembered fondly.
