Joseph Brophy Obituary

Joseph F. Brophy QUINCY Joseph F. Brophy, of Quincy passed away at home on Sunday, June 14, 2009 at age 84. Born in Quincy where he was raised and educated, he was a graduate of Mission High and Boston College, Class of 1950. A WWII veteran US Navy Air Corps aboard the aircraft carrier USS Essex, Joe was a gunner on a dive bomber and was awarded an Air Medal with 5 stars, a Distinguished Flying Cross and Presidential Unit Citation for heroism against Japan. He worked as a broker for Wausau Insurance in Belmont, retiring in 1988 and was active in Sons of Italy, Quincy City Club, St. Vincent de Paul and Most Blessed Sacrament Holy Name Society, was a founding member and first president of the Hough's Neck Community Council, a member of the USS Essex Association and was a former Park Commissioner for the city. The beloved husband of Ann (Sideri) Brophy, he was the loving father of Dennis M. Brophy and his wife Karen of Duluth, GA and Joseph F. Brophy, Jr. and his wife Irene of Quincy, dear grandfather of Jeffrey, Michael, Caitlyn and Allison, cousin of Gertrude Keating, Sr. Leone Paschala Noonan, O.P. of KY and the late John Noonan. Visiting hours will be held at the Dennis Sweeney Funeral Home, 74 Elm St., Quincy Center on Thursday, June 18 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Family and friends are invited. There will be a gathering at the funeral home on Friday at 9:00 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass at Most Blessed Sacrament Church at 10:00 a.m. Burial with Military Honors is at Pine Hill Cemetery, W. Quincy. Donations in Joe's memory may be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society at Most Blessed Sacrament Church, 1017 Sea St., Quincy, MA 02169. Mr. Brophy,
Sir, I would just like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice for our Country when you served with the USN in the Pacific during WW II fighting the Japanese as a crewmember of the aircraft carrier USS Essex(CV 9). And to your family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy. The Essex saw extensive action from 1943 through to VJ Day in 1945 as part of Task Force 58.
