Walter Read Obituary

Walter E. Read Kingston Walter E. Read, 86 of Kingston, a WWII Coast Guard and Truck Driver for Boston Sand and Gravel, died Monday, October 22 at the Jordan Hospital in Plymouth. He was born in Milton on November 20, 1920 and raised in Abington. He had lived in Hanover and Raynham before moving to Kingston 5 years ago. Mr. Read served in the Coast Guard from 1942 to 1945. He participated in the invasion of the Philippines and Okinawa. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Philippine Presidential Unit Citation, Philippine Liberation Medal, American Campaign, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign, WWII Victory and China Service Medals. He retired from Boston Sand and Gravel in 1980. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus in Hanover, a communicant of St. Joseph's Church in Kingston and he enjoyed sports, especially baseball and golf. Husband of the late Ruth A. (Rose) Read, he is survived by 2 sons, Charles P. Read of Kingston and Dennis E. Read of Hanover, 1 daughter, Arlene R. Melvin of Panama City, FL, 1 sister. Margaret Hynes of Jacksonville, FL, 4 grandsons Mark and Gregory Read of Hanover, Richard Melvin of FL and Brian James of Kingston, 2 granddaughters, Jennifer L. Wrightington of Milton and Christy Melvin of FL and 4 great-grandchildren, Emma Wrightington, Ethan Read, Katherine Wrightington and Vivene Read. He was the brother of the late Francis, Robert and Richard Read. Funeral Mass on Friday at 9 AM in St. Bridget's Church, 455 Plymouth St. in Abington. Interment in St. Patrick's Cemetery in Rockland. Visiting hours in the Sullivan Funeral Home, 45 East Water St., ROCKLAND, on Thursday from 5-9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Gentiva Home Healthcare, 40 Court St., Plymouth, MA 02360. Mr. Read,
Sir, I didn't know you but I would just like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice for our Country when you served in the USCG during WW II in the Pacific and also for being a member of the Greatest Generation. And to your family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy.
