Helen Paulsen Obituary

Helen M. Paulsen Scituate Helen M. (Hutcheson) Paulsen, of Scituate, age 85, entered into rest on October 23, 2007 with her family by her side. Helen was born in Dorchester, Ma. and her family later moved to Braintree. She graduated from Dorchester High School for Girls with Honors at age 16 and also graduated from Boston Clerical School with honors. Helen taught Sunday School at Saint Margaret Church for three years. She was also chosen to be the Queen of the May when she was only 15. She later became a member of the Propalous Society with Cardinal Cushing to help raise monies for the under privileged children for Sunset Point in Hull. Following her graduation from Boston Clerical School, Helen went on to work for Westinghouse Electric as a secretary in preparation for the World War II effort. She also worked for Dumont Television, Eastern Airlines and The Flying Tigers at Logan Airport. During World War II, she began a long career, working for the Federal Government. She worked at the Pentagon in Washington, DC and later at the Hingham Ammunition Depot as an Administrative Secretary to the Chief of Public Works. Helen transferred to the U.S. Department of Defense as a Secretary in the contract department. In 1960, Helen married Harold J. Paulsen of Scituate, where they have lived for 46 years and raised their children. As the their children became older, Helen worked many part time jobs including Joslin Diabetes Organization and Houghton Mifflin Publishers as a senior secretary to the Editor of the Reading Department. Helen also worked for the Scituate School Committee and as the Secretary for the By-Law Review Committee. Helen returned to full time work in with the Dept. of Defense, Contract Dept. and was promoted to Administrative Secretary of the Engineering Dept. She was recognized and received many awards of excellence in the performance of her work achievements. Helen retired from the Federal Govt. after 22 years of service. She remained very active and enjoyed bowling with the Womens League for over 6 years. Helen also loved to travel with her family and visited Canada, Italy, cruises to Bermuda, as well as many other places in the U.S. Helen is survived by her husband of 46 years, Harold J. Paulsen, her daughters, Karen and her husband, Stuart, and Helina and her husband Jeffrey, and a son, Eric of Virginia. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Tyler, Connor, and Morgan McKay and Moorea, Marisa, and Dylan Moylan all of Plymouth. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, Oct. 30 at 10 a.m. in St. Mary of the Nativity Church, Scituate Harbor. Relatives and Friends respectfully invited to visiting hours at the McNamara-Sparely Funeral Home, 1 Summer St. (across from St. Anthonys Church), Cohasset on Monday from 4-8 p.m. Interment Cudworth Cemetery, Scituate. In lieu of flowers, donations in Helens memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, Central New England, 1115W Chestnut St., Brockton, Ma. 02301.
