Gladys Martin Obituary

Gladys Martin Hingham Gladys (Baltucci) Martin, age 79, died on Saturday, Oct. 27th, 2007 at the South Shore Hospital in Weymouth. Born in Boston, she was a lifelong resident of Hingham, graduating from Hingham High School in 1947. From 1947 to 1969 she performed domestic duties in private homes and nursing homes. Mrs. Martin then became a social worker with the Massachusetts Welfare Department where she was involved with the Food Stamp Program by interviewing and certifying clients, issuing identification cards, maintaining master files and statistical reports. She also trained and supervised youth workers on temporary, part time and summer place placements. Following the Storm Disaster of 1978 she aided the Scituate Center with certification of applicants for food stamps for the duration of the emergency. She has been an active member of the Dorothy Bradford Chapter #135 Order of the Eastern Star in Hingham since 1980 and served as Worthy Matron from 1990-1991. She was the wife of the late Leslie I. Martin, and mother of Deborah L. Sirois of Kingston and the late Ronna Lee Sirois. She was the sister of Donald E. Baltucci of Hingham and the late Barbara Nix. She also was the stepmother of Deborah A. Clark and Donald G. Martin both of Pembroke, Cheryl L. West of Marshfield and Skip Martin of Kingston. Also survived by 6 step-grandchildren, 6 step-great grandchildren and several step nieces and nephews. A Funeral Service will be conducted on Wednesday, Oct. 31st at 11 a.m. at the Downing Cottage Funeral Chapel, 21 Pond St., Hingham. Friends may visit at the Downing Chapel on Tuesday from 4-8 p.m. An Eastern Star Service will be conducted by the Dorothy Bradford Chapter at the funeral chapel on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Dorothy Bradford Chapter #135 Order of the Eastern Star, 12 Edgewood Rd., Scituate, MA 02066. The interment will be in the Liberty Plain Cemetery, South Hingham. For directions, please visit www.downingchapel.com.
