Shirley Russ Obituary

RUSS, Shirley J.
Formerly of Chester and Gleason Streets
Was born June 11, 1921 in Addison, NY, the daughter of the late Leon F. and Myrtle L. (Tobey) Hunt, went home to be with her Lord on Sunday, August 24, 2008, at St. Joseph's Hospital at the age of 87. Her sister, Alice Benedict, predeceased Shirley. She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 66 years, Albert D. Russ; daughters and sons-in-law, Suzanne and Larry Westbrook of Erin, NY, Barbara and Stu Brown of Horseheads, NY; along with seven adored grandchildren, 16 much-loved great-grandchildren; niece, Mary Giovinazzo; and nephew, James Benedict. For many years, Shirley was the proud owner and operator of Shirley's Beauty Shop in Elmira. She was the Director of the Senior Citizens on 4 - D at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center and the Activities Director for the Town of Southport. In her free time she volunteered often and especially enjoyed doing so at Woodbrook. Family and friends are invited to gather at the Olthof Funeral Home, Inc., 1050 Pennsylvania Ave., Elmira, NY on Thursday, August 28, 2008, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Funeral services honoring her life will follow the visitation. (7 p.m.) The Reverend James Crupi will celebrate Shirley's service with Reverend Clifford Proper to assist. Interment will take place in the Woodlawn Cemetery at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to Twin Tiers Christian Academy, 640 Main Street, Breesport, NY 14816 or Horseheads Christian School, 293 Grand Central Ave., Horseheads, NY 14845. A "Candle of Remembrance" may be left for her family in obituaries at www.olthof.com.

I just want everyone to know that I was one of Shirley's & Al's foster childern that they took care of. I'm sure going to miss her. We had alot of fun & went on camping trips.

Shirley was one fun, loving and crazylady. We sure had a great time camping next to her loving spouse and Shirley. She got me started beading - even gave me her beads. Many nights we would be up after 12 a.m. "beading". Our sympathy to each of you.

Our deepest sympathy go out to Al and his family. Shirley was an inspiration to all of us. We will always remember her dining room harmonica playing and her daily visits room to room with all of her friends who were uplifted with her faith and cheerfulness..We will miss Shirley but have the peace and knowlege that she is now with her Lord.
