Pauline Sherman Obituary
SHERMAN, Pauline (Denkenberger)
Passed from this life on October 6, 2008, while a resident of Elcor Health Services Colonial Ridge North. Mrs. Sherman was born June 10, 1929 on East Hill in the Town of Elmira to Ludwig F. and Olive M. (Benson) Denkenberger. While she was an infant, the family moved to Cuyler, NY, where she was raised, attending school in neighboring DeRuyter. Pauline moved to the Village of Horseheads in 1948 when she married Ronald J. Sherman on September 19th. For several years they operated Sherman's Grocery, which stood on the site of the current Horseheads Holiday Inn. They moved to Elmira and, in 1978, returned to Horseheads when they purchased the Sherman family house at 713 West Broad Street, where she lived until recently. Pauline was predeceased by her parents; husband of 49 years, Ronald, on April 9, 1997; brother, James Valentine Denkenberger of Tully; brother, Ludwig Glenn Denkenberger of Cuyler; father-in-law and mother-in-law, John H. and Winifred (Gardner) Sherman of Horseheads; brothers-in-law, John H., Lewis and Robert L. Sherman of W. Elmira, Horseheads and Big Flats, respectively; and numerous well-loved family canine members. She is survived by her son, Ronald J. Sherman, Jr. of Erin; sister, Grace (Robert L.) Sherman of Big Flats; brother and sister-in-law, E. Robert and Jeanine Denkenberger of DeRuyter; brother and sister-in-law, Gary and Patricia Letts of Greenwood, California; sisters-in-law, Cleo (James V.) Denkenberger of Tully, and Herta (L. Glenn) Denkenberger of DeRuyter; step grandchildren, Max T. Stahl of Chicago, and Juliet C. S. Schatzberger of NYC; numerous cousins, nephews, nieces, friends; and her dearest lifelong and supportive friend, Joan Lockwood of Auburn. Pauline lost her mother very early. She and her siblings were raised through the depression years by a hard-working and loving father who sacrificed all for his children. In return, they all loved him dearly, thrived on their bond, and raised their own children with an intense love of family. Pauline worked hard as a wife, mother, homemaker, and full-time employee of Allendale Dairy, Loblaws, and finally retiring early from Great American on Lake Road in 1992 to provide at home care for her husband. She served as a Cub Scout den-mother, participated in all Boy Scout troop fund-raising dinners and activities, and was a former communicant of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church. Pauline's son acknowledges and extends his heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the professional and supportive staff at Elcor Health Services for the comfort and care provided Pauline during her residency with them. Those wishing to make donations in her memory should do so to the charity or organization of their choice, or the Falck Cancer Center Memorial Fund, c/o Arnot Ogden Medical Center, 600 Roe Avenue, Elmira, NY 14905.
