Not sure what to say?

I knew Bill only as a fellow teenager and classmate. He didn't follow the crowd and that's how he earned my respect. He had a kind of presence that didn't need everyone's approval. I regret I didn't know him better. He was a good man even then.

Oh My... I just learned of Billy's passing this past week. Billy was a great man and a great friend. He stood by me at one of the worst points of my life. Boy we had some great talks. It's been quite some time since I left the Elmira area but Billy was often in my thoughts. My thoughts and prayers are with the friends and family of this wonderful man.

Godspeed Billy, I'm sure you'll be guarding the gates of heaven soon.

To ALL of the members of the Fitch Family-When I received word of Billys' death, the day he passed, I was in a state of shock. It was not too many weeks earlier that I had seen him at a fundraiser for Sinaya and Izzybella, the two babies who died in the car fire in Painted Post, and we were discussing life in general. And earlier this year he attended the wake for my lifelong friend, Maryanne Lisi Malone. It semed that he always gave of himself in more ways than most people realized. When I told him that my son had become a federal policeman, after his years in the military, you would have thought that he was talking about his own son. He seemed so so proud. I can only pray that my children and grandchildren will become at least half the person that Billy was and then I'll know that as a parent my job was well done. The world is far better for Billy having been on this earth and we all are better for having known him. May his family and friends take comfort in the fact that he lived what he stood for and even though he can no longer be touched, his memory will live on in all of us as the person he was will forever be on our minds and in our memories. May God Bless You All and help you find comfort in the days to come.

Aunt Sarah, Niecy, Bobby and Monie,
Words could never express the loss of a "Third Street" family member. Every child who grew up on "Third Street" (between Oak St. and High St.) belonged to every parent who lived there. We all grew up as siblings/cousins and we have a bond that will last a lifetime and beyond. To lose what we use to call "One of the Gang" is one of the most devestating feelings one could ever experience. I feel I can speak for the "Third Street Gang" when I say Billy was a true gentleman in every sense of the word....a result of two wonderful parents. Billy, we love you and you will be greatly missed. May You Rest In Peace My Dear Brother and don't you climb any cherry trees!
GoD be with you,

Do not stand at my grave and forever weep.
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn’s rain.
When you awaken in the morning’s hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and forever cry.
I am not there. I did not die.

MR.FITCH WAS A GOOD MAN AND WILL BE MISSED BY MANY. MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOURS IN YOUR TIME OF SORROW. YOU ARE IN MY THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS.

Fitch family; I love you. I really hope your hearts were warmed by the outpouring of the the community at the viewing on Sunday(I was!! ). Now, that's love!!!!Billy was such a 'gentle giant' he was supportive of me when I dealt with the system...he once stood in the court room and whispered; "you get em, Cindy".
Yet, I saw this big man sweat bullets on his wedding day, and all I could say was hang in there son, and listen to the music, it will calm you..HE DID GOOD. God Bless

Don't think of Him as gone away,
His journey has just begun.
Life holds so many facets,
this earth is only one.

Just think of Him as resting
from the sorrows and the tears,
in a place of warmth and comfort,
where there are no days and years.

Think of how He must be wishing
that we all could know, today,
how nothing but our sadness
can really pass away.

And think of Him as living
in the hearts of those He touched
for nothing loved is ever lost
and He is loved so much.

-Billy You Have Been In My Life For As Long As I Can Remember.. You Have Been Concidered Family Since I've Been Born.. You Are My Uncle Billy.. I Have So Many Memories Of You.. My deepest sympathy are with the Finch family at this time. Billy was a rloe model to me in my early years as a Southside grean hornet class of 1982. I remember going to football games and seeing him play as a Jr. high schooler or younger, hoping to be like him. There were many occasions when i was playing varsity football when coach Hurley would call me Finch while chewing my behind out for doing something wrong while in a game or while in practice. I always knew the finch family, billy, bobby, and ramona who was in the same grade or around the same grade as my brohter Arthur. What i am trying to say is that i was honored to be put in the same category as billy. He was an All American as far as im concerned in many ways. My prayers go out to his family and may God bless them all. God speed Garrett Keith and family.

What a terrible lose.Id like to share a story of just what kind of person he was and what he meant to me. Soon after he became a corrections officer with the chemung county sheriff`s dept.he was assigned to the cell block where i was being held for a crime i had commited. He spoke to me about oppurtunity, second chances, and treated me with respect and gave me hope.Just as important he talked to me about accountability and being responsible for ones actions. His sincerity and genuine decency for others touched me profoundly as a youth. He may have been one of the reasons i turned my life around and bettered myself. One of the most important things I believe a person can learn is compassion which Billy had and shared with others.Recently while taking my mother to her doctors appointment i had the good fortune of running into Billy again as i had so many times since those early days and as usual we said hello and asked about each others famalies. Just then a woman began to sob uncontrollably and of course without hesitation Billy got to his feet and went over to see if he could help. He will be missed and never forgotten. Thanks Billy for all your encouraging and kind words. My sincerest sympathy`s to his family and loved ones.

My sincere condolences to Bill's Love ones. I had the pleasure to work with Bill for over twenty years. Bill will always be remembered by all those who worked with him as a great person and wanted to help others. I thought you would like to know, I recently met a fellow retired police officer here in Amman, Jordan who was from Auburn NY. When I told him where I had worked. He told me how Lt. Bill Fitch helped him when he was having problems with his teenage son and will always appreciate what he did for his son and for his family. Bill did not do just his job he did more. I am sorry I can't attend the funeral but my prayers and thoughts are with you.

My prayers go out to you Deb, and all of your family and Billy's. I remember Billy from Broadway & SHS, but my fondest memories were when I lived across the street from him on W. Second Street and Shannon was just starting school in the early 80's. They had fond nicknames for each other and she called him Bill the dill pickle. She'd look for him after school and holler to him across the street. He was such a great guy. He always had that great smile you could count on. When I was home in August I tried to look you guys up. He was on my mind. Hugs to you all.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

We have lost a treasure, having worked with Billy for more than 25 years I can truely say that he was the most sincere and kindest person that I have ever known, On the job he was the one you wanted to be your "back-up" and he never let you down. I was proud to call him Brother and most of all Friend. I have great memories of working midnight shifts, Watkins Glen Race track and all those "Coffee Times" at Steve's where we talked about and tried to solve all the problems of the World. But the best memories I have of Billy was his big heart, smile and most of all his very contagious laugh,he always put a smile on your face. Billy has left this Earth but not our hearts. with all the memories we have of him he will always be with us and I know that he will always be my back-up only now it will be with WINGS. Miss you and Love you Brother Bill.

dear family, i am so sorry for your loss. Billy was a great man. He was a kind, gentle, compassionate, and loving man who was very spitited. He loved people especially children and the feeling was mutual from all of us. I was so fond of him. he would always take the time to talk to me. He was a great man who touched so many people. I'm sorry to hear the sad news about Billy. I've known Billy since Broadway Jr. High. I can picture him walking the halls, always with a smile and always saying Hi. He had a gentleness about him, a kind soul. He surely will be missed. God Bless your family.

My prayers go out to Billy's Family and Friends who will miss him dearly. He was one of the nicest people in the world who would do anything for anyone. The one thing I will never forget he always was willing to help in anyway possible and had good things to say about everyone. He even had time, to shoot baskets at Hardy School with a little kid like myself many years ago.
