Florence Mitchell Obituary

MITCHELL, Florence Curtis
Passed away with her family at her side on November 30, 2007 after a long illness. Born May 10, 1930 in Dalton, Pennsylvania, to Florence Greggs Curtis and Leroy Curtis, she was married for 55 years to the love of her life, the Reverend Gilbert C. Mitchell, who survives her. She is also survived by their four children: sons, Randolph (Lisa Scheltz) and Theodore (Cindy); and daughters, Wendy (Bob) Featherstone and Donna (Mark) Hutchison. In addition, she is survived by nine grandchildren, Leslie Mitchell, and Elissa and Erin Dagel; Heather Mitchell; Stacey, Kara and Mitch Featherstone; and Shelly and Marty Hutchison. Florence was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. During their lifetime together, Florence and Gil lived in Millerton, PA, and Jordan, Newark, Horseheads and Elmira, New York. She was actively involved in the ministry of the United Methodist Church and especially enjoyed teaching Sunday School, singing in the choir, and participating in United Methodist Women's and missions groups. Florence cared deeply about the environment, world affairs and human rights. She was a superb seamstress and she expressed her creative talent in art, music, and a multitude of homemaking skills. Florence loved life and socializing. She had many varied interests but it was her family that was at the center of her life. She touched everyone she met with her gentleness and good humor. Friends and family are invited to call at Grace United Methodist Church, 191 Bridge St., Corning, NY 14830, on Friday, December 14, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. A celebration of her life will be held in the Sanctuary on December 15 at 11:00 a.m. The family will also be available to visit immediately after the service. In lieu of flowers, it is the wish of the family that gifts in Florence's memory be made to the Living Faith Endowment of Grace United Methodist Church, 191 Bridge St., Corning, NY 14830, or the endowment fund of the church of the donor's choice.

Both Mitchell boys feel the same! The candle is a good reminder of you - warm and a source of focus and guidance in the darkness, and beauty in even in light. I think of you often, and feel a sense of your strength and wisdom when I do. Thank you!

I still miss you Mom, but try to keep you alive by how I treat others....I remember your kindness and try to pass it on! Your "DYB" (Do Your Best) Attitude is still the standard that I try to live by!

I'm very sorry to here about the passing of Mrs Mitchell.
I will always remember the times our families spent as neighbors in Jordan and will never forget her kindness. Your family is in our prayers and we know that she is in the hands of GOD and will never be forgotten by her loving family.
