Verna Austin Obituary

AUSTIN, Verna M. (Horton)
Age 94, of Henrietta, NY, formerly of Painted Post, Lindley, NY and Wellsboro, PA, died on Wednesday, December 5, 2007, at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY. She was the wife of the late Adrian L. Austin whom she married October 3, 1940. Verna was born February 21, 1913 in Tioga County, PA, the daughter of the late Ervin S. and Minnie A. (Creeley) Horton. Verna and Adrian owned and operated a gas station and grocery store in Lindley, NY from 1950 - 1967. She was formerly employed by Corning Glass in Wellsboro and as a housekeeper prior to her marriage October 3, 1940. She attended the East Lawrence Baptist Church, was named Lindley Heritage Days Citizen of the year in 2002, was a member of the Lindley Senior Citizens Club, past member of the Wally Byam Airstream Club, a charter member of the Lindley-Presho Fireman's Auxiliary, an honorary member of the Corning area Gem & Mineral Club, and former member of the Rebecca's in Wellsboro. She was a member of the Women's Bowling Congress and was actively bowling in her 80's. She enjoyed her geraniums/violets, gardening, crocheting, knitting, and crafts. She was a wonderful, loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who forged a special bond with her family and also with the community. Verna is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Lawrence and Christina Austin of Colorado; two daughters and sons-in-law, Virginia and Paul Doud of Lawrenceville, PA and Joyce and Robert Shutts of Henrietta, NY; six grandchildren, Stephen (Beverly) Young, Dean (Cyndi) Young, Christopher Austin, Richard (Eliazer) Austin, David (Carolyn) Doud, Michelle (Rusty) Clark; eleven great-grandchildren, Shane, Jack, and Harry Young, Skyler, Richard, and Adrian Austin, Allison, Alex, Ashleigh, and Victoria Clark, and Kaitlyn Doud. Also surviving are two stepgrandchildren, Laura (Rick) Gilbert, Leslie Shutts; and two step great-grandchildren, Megan and Daryl Croft; as well as several nieces, nephews, and a host of special friends. She is also survived by stepsister, Marian Townsend; sister-in-law, Onolea Opp; and brother-in-law, James Spatol. She was preceded in death by her husband; three great-grandchildren, Angela, Benjamin, and Christopher Young; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Hugh K. (Anna) Horton, Cleave E. (Lucile, Mamie) Horton; and an infant sister. Family and friends are invited to call Thursday, December 13, 2007, from 2 - 4 p.m. at the Jacquelyn A. Buckheit Funeral Chapel, Crematory & Monuments, PC, 637 S. Main St., Mansfield, PA and on Friday, December 14, 2007, from 12:30 to 1 p.m. at the East Lawrence Baptist Church, E. Lawrence Rd., Lawrenceville, PA. The Funeral Service will follow Friday at 1 p.m. at the church with the Pastor G. Victor Perry officiating. Burial will be in West Branch Cemetery, Wellsboro, PA.
