Roland Delattre Obituary

Published by Star Tribune from Apr. 19 to Apr. 22, 2007.
Delattre, Roland André 78, of Minneapolis, died peacefully at home on April 17, 2007. Survived by wife, Judith I. Engel; sons, André Delattre (Rebecca Stanfield), Eric Delattre (Monica) and their mother Susan Borman Delattre; stepdaughters, Leanne DeYoung and Mary Beth Law (Philip Sturdivant); grandchildren, Brennan, Luke, and Clara Delattre and step-grandchildren, Eric Hoban and Macy Sturdivant; brother, Pierre Delattre (Nancy Ortenstone) and brother-in-law, Austin G. Engel (Mary Engel); nephews and nieces of the Delattre, Borman, Engel and Law families, and many very special friends. Roland was preceded in death by step-son, Paul Douglas Law. As a professor of American Studies and Religious Studies throughout his professional life, Roland believed that to be beautiful is to work at beautifying every aspect of our lives from the political to the personal: that when we beautify we participate in the life of God. He devoted himself to understanding how we can bring beauty back to the center of every experience from politics to social ritual. The book he was in the process of completing was a critique of "the ritual life of a consumer culture." His focus on beauty was inspired by his mentor at Yale, Richard Neibuhr, and by the theologian he wrote and lectured about so extensively, Jonathan Edwards. Roland was deeply inspired by his community of faith at The First Congregational Church of Minnesota—UCC. He enjoyed an especially close companionship with his sons André and Eric and their families, and with his brother Pierre. He regarded these relationships and his marriage to Judy as a celebration of what he called "the charmed life." A memorial service will be held on Monday, April 23rd at 1 p.m. at First Congregational Church of Minnesota—UCC, 500 8th Ave. S.E., Mpls.; 612-331-3816. A reception with light refreshments will follow the service. All are welcome. In recognition of Roland's passionate commitment for social justice and of his lifelong love of French culture and language, a memorial fund is being established to facilitate travel in France for students of Minneapolis' Patrick Henry High School French Club. In lieu of flowers the family requests that checks may be written payable to Patrick Henry High School with memo citation: "Roland Delattre Memorial France Trip Fund" and mailed to Patrick Henry High School, 4320 Newton Avenue North., Mpls, MN 55412; Attn: Christina Maynor.

Dear Judy, I have just heard about Roland's passing and am very sad to know he's gone. He was one of my professors in the 1980s and I have always thought fondly of him. Working with him on the Swedish Summer Seminar was a special part of my graduate student days.

Dear Judy,
With great sorrow we have learned that our dear friend Roland is no longer among us. Over the many years that have passed since we got to know each other we had a great communication. Roland will always stay in our minds.
God bless you and your family.

Dear Ms. Engel and the Delattre Family,
I just recently learned of Dr. Delattre's recent passing and the news brough me much sorrow. Roland served as an "outside reader" on my dissertation committee in philosophy at the University of Minnesota. While my contact with him was relatively brief, I was deeply touched by his love of life, his love of his family, and his love of learning. I still have fond memories of his telling me about his apartment that he lived in and the apartment that he worked in down the hall. Such a wonderful person leaves a large hole when gone, but may memories of Roland's love and joy for you and for life sustain you in your time of grief. You all will be in my thoughts and prayers.
Sharing in your sorrow,

Cherished friend and highly regarded colleague, the years with Roland, first at Miami U. and then at the U. of TN in Knoxville (1963-1974), were incomparable in terms of intellectual stimulation, conversational provocation, and personal warmth. His work on Jonathan Edwards remains among the best. A hotly contested game of tennis anyone?

During the early 1980's I came to know Roland as one of my running buddies at the U of M. He, Ted Lanpher and I often ran together on Sunday mornings before church, when we shared things of the soul.

When I married my wife Connie on February 19, 1983, Roland was my best man at our ceremony at St Phillips Lutheran in Fridley. Even though our ways parted in recent years, I shall always remember Roland as a very dear and supportive friend.

Roland was my good friend and fellow student at Yale from 1958 to 1961 and then my cherished colleague at Miami and Tennessee, 1963-1975. His faithful conversation will remain forever dear to me.

Judy, I went to the Aster Cafe yesterday for lunch. While I was there I remembered you being the person who first brought me there, on one of our delightful river walks. so of course, I held you close in my heart, feeling so grateful of the love we share. Bev left a message and that's how I learned of Roland's transition. Otherwise, I wasn't aware he was sick. I'm sorry for your loss. I wish you peace of mind and spirit, and I pray your angel, Paul is holding you now, and greeting Roland in luminous bliss. May you continue to recognize all the love that IS.

With Loving Kindness,
Sarah Elizabeth

All four of us will miss Roland. His love of dance and French music brought us to his wonderful acquaintence. He did indeed live a "charmed life" as he often said and we will remember him.
