Roy Sherrill Obituary

Roy Pinkney "R.P." Sherrill, 84, of 9794 Paul Payne Store Road, Stony Point, passed away Monday, March 2, 2009, at his home. He was born May 12, 1924, in Alexander County, to the late Roy and Ila Moose Sherrill. He served our country in World War II in the U.S .Navy as a gunner on the USS Circe in the Pacific. He was employed at the J.C. Penny Distribution Center for 38 years and was member of Elk Shoals ARP Church. His passion was gardening. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Harold Sherrill, Kenneth (Chub) Sherrill, Tom Ben Sherrill and Renn Sherrill; three sisters: Nell Sherrill, Grace Johnson and Margaret (Blackie) Pope. He is survived by his wife, Faye Grant Sherrill, of the home; two sons, Michael Sherrill and wife, Susan, of Statesville, Randy Sherrill and wife, Rachel, of Stony Point; a daughter, Amy Walker and husband, Dwight, of Stony Point; a brother, Winfred (Red Bone) Sherrill and wife, Linda, of Stony Point; three sisters, Dorothy Martin, Marie Johnson and Christine Honeycutt and husband, David, all of Stony Point; grandchildren, Jessica Rainey, Sarah Sherrill, Joshua Feimster and wife, Crystal, Daniel Walker, Chris Sherrill and wife, Shelia; stepgrandchildren, Brent Icenhour and wife, Jen, and Kristi Lackey; great-grandchildren, Colin Rainey, Jasmine Keever and Jake Shoemaker. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 5, at Elk Shoals ARP Church. Dr. Earl Linderman and the Rev. Walter Flemming will officiate. Burial will follow in the New Salem Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Military rites will be provided by VFW Hiddenite Post #10,000 and VFW Taylorsville Post #5466. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. today at Chapman Funeral Home. At other times, the family will assemble at the home of son Randy Sherrill, 2920 Mt. Wesley Church Road, Stony Point. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Elk Shoals ARP Church, 2850 Elk Shoals Loop, Stony Point, NC 28678. Faye and family, I am very sorry to here about RP but we know he is in a better place. I wanted you to know how much I and my family love all of you. We have nothing but fond memories of your family. I often think about the volleyball games and the rabbit hunts and fishing trips that I experienced with all of you. I pray for the peace of God to be with you. Love you, Jerry and family
