Dear Namy family,
I do not know you or your son Joel, but was touched by the story "A Great Loss to West Point" that was passed on to me. My brother, Ryan James Waldheger, passed away last April from ALL. I am his younger sister - and also his bone marrow donor. What an amazing young man you raised. I hope you continue to feel proud of him every single day. My brother was diagnosed at age 17 and passed away at age 28. He was a fighter too, just like your Joel. He would have reached out to Joel - inspired by his story - which is why I do the same to you.
Take care always.

Jeff & Bitsy
We have not had much contact over the last several years but have hoped earnestly for Joel’s well being. Lynn & I were crushed to hear belatedly of his passing. This registry speaks well of all the lives made better for having known him.
We will always remember him as he was the first time you invited us to your home which must have been almost 15 years ago. Strutting his stuff on Albany Street! Surely there are spruce trees in heaven.
God Bless

Dear Namy's,
My son was in E-3 with Joel. As he prepares to leave for Camp Buckner, Renner shared with me how much he'll miss Joel. Joel was a very positive reinforcement during Renner's Plebe year - full of encouragement and hope. You can be very proud. May our Lord strengthen your love of Him until we all meet in Glory.

To the Namy Family,
You know how we all feel about Joel here at the Institute. and the young man that he was. Although the flame of his life was relatively brief in terms of years, the impact of that flame of those he touched was significant. The impact of his flame will continue to burn at our training center. Our deepest sympathy to all of you.

Joel -
Do you remember the first day we met? I do - right after the march back from Lake Frederick, I came into the room after starting reorgy week and you were standing there with all your stuff on the floor. You walked over and shook my hand, and then got chewed out by our team leader for "falling out."
We had a lot of good times - and a lot of really tough ones. I want to let you and your family know that your mental toughness is what got me through the first semester of West Point - without you there for sympathy, comic relief, and someone to complain to - I wouldn't have lasted past Christmas.
Remember Christmas 2005? I gave you two cigars and you gave me a shot glass? We promised that when we survived plebe year that we would drink scotch and smoke those two cigars - champions of the world. We never got to do that, because your first round of cancer took you away temporarily, and my leaving West Point in December 2006 made it a tad tougher.
I have tickets for Army/Navy 2008 - it was going to be a huge surprise...
So Joel I want you to know that your family is in my prayers as well as the prayers of thousands of others whose lives you touched. You are always in my thoughts and prayers.
There better be a smoking and drinking section in heaven - I'll be bringing the scotch if you'll remember to grab those two cubans.
I love you man - thanks for everything.

Joel,
I can truly say you were a friend, a teammate, and a pal. Your questions were vast, and they not only educated you, but they educated everyone. Your smile will always be remembered and your pride will never be duplicated.
For the family stay strong and the Velasco's prayers are with you all. Lastly, thank you for providing me the oppurtunity to meet and know your son and brother.

I never met Joel, but as a soldier I felt compelled to attend the ceremony at Eastern Hills. The Major mentioned that he was saddened that soldiers will never experience Joel's leadership. But hearing from Joel's classmates convinced me that his toughness, tenacity, courage, and dedication will influence the next generation of Army leaders in the best possible way. He will be missed, but the Army will continue to feel Joel's influence for decades to come. To his family: Thank you so much for sharing Joel with us, even for a little while.

To Joel,
As a younger kid, Joel was always someone I could look up to. Everyday you could see how he was different from other people. He was a huge influence on me and I would not be the same person today if it wasn't for him. He will always be remembered.

To the Namy family...
Our hearts go out to you all today...we wish we could be at the service to take part in celebrating Joel's life. It was an honor and a true pleasure to know him...to watch him grow up into such a neat young man of God. Although he is now in such a better place...it is still hard to understand losing him at such a young age...he had so much more to do here on earth. We will miss him and we grieve with you...our hearts are broken. We love you all...and send our prayers across the distance.

Joel, man, he was such a great guy. Always there to give you a smile, or give you his support. He was truly one of a kind and a very special individual. An individual that the world needs more of. It's so hard to find the words to express how I feel, my sympathies. I just can't believe he passed, he was such a strong person. I guess all I can do is pray for him and his family, and take solace in that I know God is with him now. I will miss you Joel, you stay strong man.

Joel was a fun, friendly, and all around great person. One of my favorite memories of Joel is from first grade when he used to share stories about Davy Crockett during "show and tell" everyday until he had to be cut off by the teacher.
