To the Bierfeldt Family,
I am truly sorry to hear about your loss. I was a student at Sullivan Middle School and was lucky to have Mr. Bierfeldt as a principle. May God bless his soul and give all of you strength during this difficult time. Although he is no longer with us, the memories of his good deeds, great character, and an ever-smiling face will always shine within our hearts! Our prayers are with you! Please take care. To Mary and family--so many folks have expressed that John was an incredible principal and teacher. My sons and I will second that. He encouraged my sons when others didn't see the good in them--what greater legacy can a man have than to have been in a kid's corner when he was 12 or 13? The Worcester Public Schools was truly blessed to have had John for so many years.

To The Bierfeldt Family -
My son & I want to express how wonderful John has been as a teacher, friend & mentor at STB. Although we only met John this year he will forever be in our hearts. His dedication, intensity, and passion will be greatly missed.
"When I come to the end of the road and the sun has set for me, I want no rites in a gloom-filled room. Why cry for a soul set free? Miss me a little - but not too long And not with your head bowed low. Remember the love that we once shared. Miss me - but let me go. For this is a journey we all must take, and each must go alone. It's all part of the Master's Plan, a step on the road to home. When you are lonely and sick at heart, Go to the friends we know and bury your sorrows in doing good deeds. Miss me - but let me go."
Our thoughts and prays are with you. Nate & Karen Long STB

When I was in the 8th grade, Mr. Bierfeldt assumed the position of principal at Sullivan Middle. As has been reflected in so many of the other comments in this guest book, he was truly passionate about his profession, an all too rare exception ot the rule. His dedication, not just ot being an educator, but to the growth and nurturing of his students in general is an example that ought to be followed by all in his profession.
My best example of this came about five years later, when I was about to graduate from high school, I met him outside of the new Sullivan. Not only did he remember me by name, but was still familiar with my course of study, and still showed interest in my future plans. I've known too few teachers who took such a deep interest.
I consider myself quite lucky to have met this man. His family should be proud of all he accomplished, and consoled by the fond memories of all he touched.

Of the hundreds of teachers I've had in my lifetime, the names and faces of very few come to mind decades later. Mr. Bierfeldt is a standout in that his energy and dynamic approach to engaging his students, individually and as a group, at Worcester East Middle School in the early '70s seems to have continued throughout his career.

Dear Mrs. Bierfeldt and family.
I was fortunate enough to be a student in the 8th grade, at Worcester East Middle School, in 1976-77. Your husband/father was my first French teacher. I have fond memories of Mr. Bierfeldt's enthusiasm and energy in class, each and EVERY day. He always had those 3x5 note cards in his hands, stored in his left breast pocket, to ensure that every idea, word, expression, and phrase was given to his students. We had a French Club. Mrs. Bierfeldt, you baked a blue and white tiger head cake, as 1st prize in a French spelling bee, that I won. THAT day, Mr. Bierfeldt told me that I could, and should pursue French, in H.S. and beyond, as a career. He saw something that nobody else did, in me. After four years in the U.S.M.C. I took his advice, and have been a Teacher of French/Spanish for 22 years now. He will never be forgotten. To you, Mr. Bierfeldt, "Au revoir, mon ami, je te verrai encore, un jour, j'en suis sur".

He was my priciple at sullivan middle school back in 1993-1994 he was so full of energy and life he was someone we as students can confide in when we kids were having issues at home. I seen him not only as my priciple but an excellent role model and i will always remember him in this way, my prayers go out to his family and friends and others that got a chance to be around him including other classmates. He was an amazing person on earth and he will always be an amazing person in heaven!!

I had Mr. Bierfeldt as my Spanish teacher at Worcester East Middle School back in '85-'86. He was the kind of teacher that made you love the subject because of his passion for it and for teaching. I never forgot him. I recall that he let his students choose their own names in Spanish for his class and he remembered them all whether or not we picked our "real" name or just a name that we wanted to be called. My real name is Christine but I wanted to be called Mariana (I don't recall why)but he always remembered. I also remember having a "feast" of Spanish and French foods. He always treated his students with respect and that made his students respect him in return. I always looked forward to his class. It was always interesting and fun. I will never forget him. I am so sorry for your loss. He will be missed by many. God bless.

Perhaps the greatest testament to the caring nature of my uncle was his kids, not only his own but those who he instructed in school as well. The fact that he was able to touch so many lives in such a short time on this Earth speaks volumes about his character and passion for his work. He will be missed by all that he came into contact with, and the world truly has lost an incredible father, teacher, friend, and person in general.

Katie,
I did not know your father well, but I feel like I am getting to know him through all those expressing their gratitude and admiration for him. I know that he had to be a wonderful, kind man to have raised an open-hearted daughter like you! May you feel his love with you always. He will be close. When you feel a breeze touch your face softly, or watch a bird soar, or marvel at a stunning sunset--feel his spirit in all of these. Hid loving spirit will be there...

To the Bierfeldt Family,
I am sorry for your loss. Your Dad was so understanding when my Dad was sick. He allowed me to leave early every day to be with my father and mother for six months. His care and compassion for the needs of my family was a blessing at a most difficult time for me.
I used to greet him in the morning at Burncoat High and we would talk about many things, and I would remind him that I was praying for him. Please know that your family is in my prayers today.
Respectfully in Christ,

Mr.Bierfeldt, what can I say what you were as a principal was nothing compared to what you was as a person and you were a great principal, but what people dont understand is that in order for you to be as good you was you had to be special and have a unique heart the type that we should all have kind, gentle, loving and truly caring.Sir you were an outstanding person you touched so many lives and you will never ever be forgotten and although it hurts that your gone its only right for you to be with god in eternal paradise

I am so greatly saddened to learn of Mr. Bierfeldt's passing. Almost thirty years ago I took first year Spanish from him at Worcester East Middle School, and in that one class he set the standard for me of what a teacher should be. To The Bierfeldt Family,
I am so very sorry for your loss. Mr. Bierfeldt was my principal at Sullivan Middle School, 1995-1996. I also knew Kate from Wawecus Road School. Kate, my heart goes out to you. Mr. Bierfeldt made such an impact in not only my life but every student who was ever fortunate enough to have met him if you met him; learned from him. Every time he spoke of any subject, it was with a conviction and a passion you could not help but to pay attention. A word was never wasted, if he said something, you can be sure he had a reason. He loved teaching his students and it showed, he genuinely cared, he always looked out for me and made sure I was doing alright and had everything I needed. It was educators like Mr. Bierfeldt that have always made me interested in learning. It was at Sullivan I knew I wanted to not only graduate high school but also college, which I did and soon I will start working on my Master's, then I plan on becoming and educator as well. I know that if I could have half of the ability of that man. Just a part, I would be blessed in knowing I could make world of difference. When I knew him, he was always talking about making a difference. Rest assured he has, in so many lives, as you already know. Just reading through this guest book is evidence that legacy will live on in all of his students and lives he has touched. He will always be remembered. God Bless.

Dear Mrs. Bierfeldt & Family,
“What moves through us is a silence, a quiet sadness, a longing for one more day, one more word, one more touch, we may not understand why you left this earth so soon, or why you left before we were ready to say good-bye, but little by little, we begin to remember not just that you died, but that you lived. And that your life gave us memories too beautiful to forget.” ~Author Unknown”
I can remember his first year at BHS, my daughters were so impressed that he remembered their names, as well as taking the time to stop and chat with them in the hall in-between classes, right away making them feel welcomed. He always listened to their concerns and made sure he came to their group meetings. He truly believed in his students never putting limitations on their capabilities.
I’m truly thankful that he also supported the Destination Imagination program, and without hesitation volunteered to be my daughter’s team’s appraiser two years in a row.
We’re truly thankful that our lives entwined thru our community involvement, he will forever be remembered for his kindness, passion, and dedication in all that he did, and truly missed by all.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you all, may the love of family and friends keep you strong.
In deepest sympathy,

Wow I can honestly say that In the past 25 years I've thought of John Bierfeldt 1000 times...You see I was a lost cause @ Worcester East Middle, I hated school and was definetly headed down the wrong path. For some reason he took a liking to me....why? I'll never understand. Maybe he saw something in me that I couldn't see @ that age. I'm 42 now sitting@ work holding back a tear for a man I haven't seen in decades. I always thought that one day I might run into him and thank him for helping me become the man I am today. God's Speed Mr. B! I'll never forget what you did for me. What a wonderful legacy he's left for his grandchildren.

Dear Aunt Mary and Bierfeldt kids,
I was so shocked and saddened to hear the news about Uncle John. I really wish that I could be with all of you right now. I have such wonderful memories - the trip to Cape Cod, the trips to Maine and the Jersey shore. He will be greatly missed by our whole family.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."
It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.
God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.
If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.
So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.
And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Mary and family,
From the first time we met you and John in July, 1974 at St Vincent's Hospital we knew in an instant how special you are both as individuals and as a couple. I know that we were both new and nervous parents, scared and excited. Both Ed and I recognized the grace, dignity and common sense that you both had. Over the years you never lost those virtues.
In many ways, our families grew up together. And your example showed us so much. You and John together, by how you lived your lives encouraged us to try. For Ed and I, John will always be a shining example of a kind and caring father and husband and friend. He was a wonderful teacher not only to his students but to his friends. John might not have realized it, but really he was a powerful teacher of how to live life. Indeed, he is one of the finest men we have ever known.
Mary, When my father was dying and critically ill I wrote that "he would live on forever in our hearts". And so it will be with John. John Bierfeldt wil live forever in so many hearts. Our deepest sympathy and fondest memories.

I am sorry to hear about your great loss. Mr. Bierfeldt was a very admired and wise man, he was the only principal that I ever had that knew every single persons name in school.(Sullivan Middle 2001-2003)

our condolences be we with you Bierfeldts every step of the way. He was the best principal, and knew how to brighten up a childs day, He was there for all my talent shows and coach my brother through baseball he was one heck of a guy, a friend, a teacher, principal and im sure plenty more. he tought me well i couldn't forget my years at sullivan or even my play time on the fields as i not only watched but bothered them at the games. wow its so hard to say goodbye to such a strong man and shocking he had to leave so soon its like yesterday i was visiting him in his office and today he's in that better place.
best wishes be with you all and sorry for your loss but if there is one thing I can remember about him most it was his words of wisdom so lets not say goodbye but say see ya later.
we'll Always remember you love the Beltran family

So sorry to hear of your loss. Mr. Bierfeldt was the nicest principal I ever had. By far one of the most genuine people ever. He made sure to know every one of his students by name, and was the most warm and welcoming of all administrators I have ever met. He will be greatly missed. My prayers go out to the entire family.

Dear Mrs. Bierfeldt and Family,
I am so very sorry for your loss. Mr. Bierfeldt was one of the best administrators I have ever known. My family was very lucky to have had the opportunity to be part of Sullivan Middle School while Mr. Bierfeldt was Principal. He was so wonderful with all the students and as a part of the PTO, he worked so hard to involve all parents to be part of their children's education. I am so fortunate to have met him as well as learned from him. He will be dearly missed by all, especially the students whom he has made a difference in their lives today. My daughter and son both have wonderful memories of SMS, especially our trips to New York City, all because of Mr. Bierfeldt. God bless all of you in this time of sorrow. You are in our prayers.

I know that Mr. Bierfeldt left a great impression on myself and many others. He was a genuinely caring person who knew each of his many, many students personally. I attended his school about 8 years ago and he still, as of a few months ago, knew who I was. It really meant a lot to me having a principal who was as genuine as Mr. Bierfeldt and I know that he will be sorely missed.

Mr. Bierfeldt was the principal at Sullivan Middle when I was in school there. He was the best principal I had ever known and an all around really nice guy. I'll never forget how he inspired even the most difficult of kids to be tidy and respectful. I'll certainly never forget how he knew every kids name in the whole school - even the kids who didn't get into trouble! He was an inspiration and a well respected man. My condolences go out to the family. Keep him alive in your memories.
