William Baxley Obituary

MYRTLE BEACH - Col. William J. “Bill” Baxley Jr., U.S. Army (Ret.), age 81, of Martinique Street, died Tuesday, November 4, 2008, at his residence.

Col. William J. Baxley Jr. was born in West Palm Beach, FL, the son of the late William Joshua Baxley, Sr. and Harriett Lucius Baxley. A native of Dillon, he graduated from West Point in 1950, and earned an MBA from the University of Alabama in 1962. During his twenty-two year career in the U.S. Army, he served as an Infantry Battalion Commander in Vietnam and as a colonel in the Office of the Secretary of Defense. He received the Silver Star, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Bronze Medal and the Freedom Foundation’s George Washington Honor Medal.

Colonel Baxley joined Coastal Carolina University in 1972 and served the institution in many capacities, including Associate Chancellor of Advancement and Dean of the E. Craig Wall Sr. College of Business Administration until his retirement in 1992. Colonel Baxley continued to serve as Dean Emeritus of E. Craig Wall Sr. College of Business Administration. In 2003, he was named an honorary founder of the University. In 2008, the Coastal Carolina University Board of Trustees named University Hall the Bill Baxley Hall in honor of Colonel William J. Baxley Jr. who served the University in various capacities for nearly thirty years. He was predeceased by his first wife, Carolyn Wood Baxley; a son, William Wood Baxley; and a brother, Henry Lucius Baxley.

Survivors include his wife, Beverly Bryan Baxley of Myrtle Beach; one son, John Green Baxley and his wife Audrey of Jacksonville, FL; five grandchildren, William Joshua Baxley IV, Sarah Weiss, Joseph Edward “Jeb” Baxley, Robert Baxley, and Carolyn Jean Sanchez; four stepchildren; ten stepgrandchildren; and a daughter-in-law, Pamela Willis Baxley of Spartanburg, SC.

A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 7, 2008, at First United Methodist Church of Myrtle Beach with Rev. Ken Timmerman officiating. Inurnment will be in Riverside Cemetery in Dillon, SC.

I had the opportunity to meet Col. Baxley during my appointment at the CCU-Myrtle Beach Higher Education Center. Col. Baxley was a very kind and gentle giant.
