James Lewis Obituary

James Lewis, 75, a resident of the Jewish Home since 2007, died Tuesday evening at the Jewish Home after an illness. His wife of nearly 40 years is the former Dianne Carpenter, Scranton.

Born June 27, 1933, in Pocono Pines, son of the late Joseph and Barbara Habib Lewis, he was a graduate of Tobyhanna High School and a member of Our Lady of the Lake Church, Pocono Pines. After serving in the Army during the Korean War, he became a co-owner and operator of Lewis' Supermarket, a Mountainhome institution, and retired in 1997. A longtime resident of Mountainhome, he later spent his retirement in Scranton. Active in his community, he was a member of the American Legion, Evans-Blitz Post 922, Pocono Mountain Council 4159 of the Knights of Columbus, as well as a charter member of the Money Investors Invest ment Club. He enjoyed spending summers in Ocean City, N.J., bowling, playing cards and following golf, baseball and NASCAR. He was looking forward to the birth of his first granddaughter, Catherine Elizabeth Aller, who is due later this year.

Also surviving are a daughter, Tiffany and husband, Christopher Aller, Fort Worth, Texas; four brothers, Thomas and wife, Margaret, Bethlehem; William and wife, Beverly, and Joseph, all of Pocono Pines; and Norman and wife, Rosemary, Naples, Fla.; two sisters, Alice and Marjorie Lewis, both of Pocono Pines; nieces, nephews and godchildren.

He was also preceded in death by a brother, Lewis Lewis; and two sisters, Sadie Christman and Betty Joseph.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 9:30 a.m. in Our Lady of the Lake Church, Sullivan Road, Pocono Pines, by the Rev. Joseph Kopacz. Interment, Pocono Lake Cemetery, Pocono Pines.

Friends may call Sunday, 5 to 7 p.m., at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Jewish Home of Eastern Pennsylvania, 1101 Vine St., Scranton, 18510; Mercy Hospice, 746 Jefferson Ave., Scranton, 18510; or the Alzheimer's Association, 57 N. Franklin St., Wilkes-Barre 18701. Arrangements by the John J. Turko and Sons Funeral Home, Olyphant.
