James Lindsey Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch from Aug. 9 to Aug. 10, 2008.
LINDSEY, Major James Robert "Bobby," died August 7, 2008, at his home in Chesapeake, Va., at the age of 78. Born in Richmond, Va., he moved to Portsmouth with his family during WWII, where he attended Craddock High School. After the war, his family returned to Richmond, where he graduated from Varina High School. In 1950, his uncle talked him into taking a job with the Henrico Police Department, "until something better came along." He served there for nearly 35 years, including an interruption to serve as a member of the Air Force during the Korean War. In 1985, he retired as Henrico's Deputy Chief and entered the real estate business. He worked first in Richmond and then in Mathews County, where he and his beloved wife built their dream home on the banks of the Piankitank River. While residing in Henrico, he was a member of the Thomas N. Davis Chapter of the Masonic Lodge, the Charter President of the Henrico Fraternal Order of Police - Lodge #4, a graduate of the FBI National Academy, the driving force behind the formation of the Sandston Jets Little League Football and the Highland Springs High School Football Boosters, and a recent addition to that school's Wall of Fame. After retiring to Mathews, he became a charter member of the Mathews Kiwanis Club and Mathews Crime Stoppers. He was a devoted family man and is preceded by his parents, Otis and Thelma; as well as his brother, Marvin. Among the many people who will be left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 54 years, Bettie; his daughter, Teresa Lindsey Jenkins of Mathews, Va.; his son and daughter-in-law, Troy and Tricia Lindsey of Chesapeake, Va.; his grandsons and their wives, Michael and Tracy Jenkins of Rocky Mount, Va.; and John and Susan Jenkins of Powhatan, Va.; as well as two great-grandchildren, Lindsey and Aidan Jenkins. Funeral services will be conducted at the Nelsen Funeral Home at 4650 S. Laburnum Avenue on Monday, August 11, 2008 at 2 p.m., with graveside services to follow at the Washington Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Nelsen Funeral Home on Sunday, August 10, 2008 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. There will be a Masonic Service on Sunday, August 10, 2008 at 6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Olive Branch Methodist Church, 12403 Harcum Rd., Gloucester, Va. 23061.

Dear Bettie, Teresa, Troy and families,
We are all so sorry. Bobby was a wonderful, loving friend of my father's and we will cherish all the memories we have of our two families. Know our family is grieving with you and hugs for you all. Mom & Dad loved you both Ms. Bettie.
We will light a candle and say a prayer, for we know they are together again telling tall tales and fish stories.
Love to all,
The Edwin and Patricia Clay family

Mrs. Lindsey and Family,
I had the honor of working for Major Lindsey for 8.5 years. Though he tried to be "stern", you could tell deep down he was a great guy who only wanted the best for his troops.
May the Lord bless you and keep you in this time of sorrow. He and Col. Sheppard will definitely keep the troops straight in heaven. God bless each of you.

Mrs. Lindsey and family: I am so very sorry to hear of Bobby's death. He and I go back to FBI Academy days and though we somewhat lost touch with each other, I still think of him. He was a gentleman and was very highly respected by all who had the pleasure of being in his presence.
May God bless all of you,
Chief (Ret'd) P. G. Minetti, Hampton Police Dept.
