Dorothy Mays Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch from Aug. 9 to Aug. 10, 2008.
MAYS, Dorothy "Dot" W., beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 8, 2008 at her son's home in Varina. Dot was born on August 12, 1916 in Buckingham, Va. After graduating from Varina High School, Dot went to work at Thalhimers, where she met Vincent K. Mays, whom she later married. During WWII, she moved with her husband to Florida, but returned to Richmond to raise her two children after he was killed in the service. Dot was employed as a budget analyst for the Defense General Supply Center where she worked until her retirement. She was a lifelong member of Calvary United Methodist Church and worked in the Children's Division. She was involved in many organizations including the Altrusa Club of Richmond, Varina Woman's Club, the Battlefield Homemakers, the Varina Brush Club, and the Friends of Varina. Dot will be remembered as a loving and caring mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. Her greatest joys were the times she spent having all the family over for Sunday dinner. She was predeceased by her husband, Vincent Kent Mays; her parents, William E. and Elizabeth Trimmer Wood; and her sister and her husband, Isabelle and Earl Wilson. Dot is survived by her son, V. Kent Mays Jr. and his wife, Jody; her daughter, Veeanne Crenshaw and her husband, Buddy; seven grandchildren, Kenny Mays and his wife, Linda, with Ashley and Nick, Debbie Nelson and her husband, Jay, with Brandon, Adam and Kyle, Scott Mays and his wife, Lisa, with Chad, Christopher and Cameron, Trea Crenshaw and his wife, Laura, with Kasie, Holly Crenshaw, Forrest Mays and Kevin Jones; nieces, Donna Curry and Bonnie Rollins; and nephews, Earl and Gene Wilson. Dot's family would like to thank the compassionate caregivers who helped their mother enjoy her later years, and the caring staff of Bon Secours Hospice. A funeral service will be held at Calvary United Methodist Church on Monday, August 11, 2008 at 11 a.m. The family will receive friends in the social hall after the service. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Calvary United Methodist Church.

It would be a treasure if we could have only a few of the qualities held in Dot. Her family is blessed.
