Lillian Hill Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch on Aug. 14, 2008.
HILL, Mrs. Lillian A. "Boots," entered her heavenly home on Friday, August 8, 2008 at her residence. Lillian, a native of Petersburg, was born October 8, 1922 to the late Harold and Susie Garner-Fox, and was reared by her adopted mother, the late Laura Parham. At an early age Lillian accepted Jesus Christ, and until her death was a member of First Baptist Church, Harrison Street, Petersburg. She was educated in the Petersburg Public School System, where she graduated from Peabody High School, class of 1943, and was a standout player, lettering in girls' varsity basketball. While in high school, she met the love of her life, the late James L. "Jelly Bean" Hill Sr. She then married her love and was a devoted wife for 52 years. From this marriage Lillian had two sons, James Leroy Jr. and Terry Emil. For many years, Lillian was a homemaker until she became a member of the Peabody cafeteria staff, where she was employed for 18 years before retiring. "Boots," as she was affectionately called, had an affectionate smile and was a loving person to everyone she encountered, as well as a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Lillian, along with several close friends, held membership in the Blaze Social Club. She enjoyed traveling and socializing with her club members. Lillian had a passion for knitting and crocheting, especially quilts and blankets. She participated in weekly knitting classes and other activities for seniors at the Tabernacle Baptist Church Center. She found great joy in her grandchildren and great-grandchild, and any time one came to see her, she would just light up with her smile, always telling everybody about her love for them. Lillian loved to cook and always invited family, friends and other guests to visit her home. She is survived by her two sons, James L. Hill Jr. of Suitland, Md., and Terry E. Hill of Petersburg; grandchildren, James L. Hill III (Joan) of Forestville, Md., Jonathan E. Hill of Largo, Md., Brandon J. Hill of Laurel, Md., Jaylyn S. Smith of Baltimore, Md.; great-grandson, Julian A. Hill of Forestville, Md.; sisters-in-law, Marie L. Harris and Linda S. Jones (Ronnie), both of Petersburg; nieces, Rhonda and Michelle Jones of Petersburg; devoted cousins, Irene Eldridge of New York, James C. Vaughan of Skippers, Va., Alice Bowles of Petersburg, Va.; and a host of cousins and other relatives. Lillian cherished her former daughters-in law, Sandra Hill-Garner, Maxine L. Hill and Lydia Joe-Hill. Special acknowledgements to her devoted friends, Mrs. Marie Baugh, Mrs. Marjorie Thompson, Mr. Richard McKenzie, Stephanie D. Ellison, Marquette Wynn, Glenda Hines and Patricia Randolph. Special thanks to the staff of Crater Community Hospice, Dr. Shirley Moten and Mr. Steve Dugger. A homegoing service to celebrate the life of Lillian A. "Boots" Hill will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, August 16, 2008 at First Baptist Church, 236 Harrison St., Petersburg, Va. The Rev. Dr. Jeremiah Tillman, pastor, officiating, and the Rev. Dr. Andrew J. White Sr., pastor of Zion Baptist Church, Petersburg, eulogist. The remains will lie in repose at the church one hour prior to the service. A Christian wake will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday, August 15, 2008 at the chapel of the J.M. Wilkerson Funeral Establishment, Inc., 102 South Ave., Petersburg, Va. Relatives and friends will assemble at the residence, 716 Independence Ave., Petersburg, Va., at noon. IF YOU COULD PICTURE CALVARY
AND JESUS ON THAT CROSS,
WOULD YOU DARE SWITCH PLACES
AND DIE TO SAVE THE LOST....

AS YOU GAZE UPON HIS FACE
AND SEE THOSE NAIL SCARRED HANDS
WOULD IT GIVE YOU COMPASSION
ENOUGH TO TAKE A STAND.....

IF YOU FELT HIS WOUNDED SIDE
WOULD IT MAKE YOU CRY,
TO THINK HOW JESUS SUFFERED
JUST HANGING THERE TO DIE...

WOULD IT, MAKE YOU STOP AND WONDER
WHAT IF THAT PERSON WERE YOU
COULD YOU SAY IT FROM YOUR HEART
THAT YOU COULD CARRY IT THROUGH....

AND 1 MORE HAD TO GO,

~~Roadstop To Heaven~~

ROADSTOP TO HEAVEN

THIS JOURNEY IS A ROAD STOP
ON OUR WAY TO HEAVENS SHORE,
THEN OUR SUFFERING WILL BE OVER
AND WE WILL REST FOREVERMORE...

NO MORE TRIALS HERE TO HAUNT US
AND BRING US DOWN EACH DAY,
NO MORE WORRIES OF TOMORROW,
FOR IN HEAVEN WE WILL STAY...

ALL THOSE TEARS YOU HAVE CRIED BEFORE
WILL BE FOREVER DRY,
AND WE WILL SING NEW SONGS OF PRAISE
IN OUR NEW HOME ON HIGH.....

JUST ANOTHER ROAD STOP FRIEND
AND ANOTHER MILE TO GO,
THEN YOUR JOURNEY WILL BE OVER
DOWN HERE ON EARTH BELOW......

WHEN I AM GONE AWAY
WHEN I AM GONE AWAY

WHEN THE DAY MUST COME
THAT I MUST GO,
AND LEAVE THIS WORLD BEHIND
REMEMBER ME WHEN FLOWERS BLOOM
I WILL NOT BE FAR BEHIND.

REMEMBER ALL THE GOOD TIMES
WE SHARED THROUGHOUT THIS LIFE
REMEMBER ALL THE LOVE WE SHARED
AND HOW WE AVOIDED ALL THE STRIFE.

REMEMBER ALL THE HAPPY DAYS
WHEN OUR HEARTS WAS FULL OF GLEE,
REMEMBER ALL THE PROMISES WE MADE
THAT WOULD BE FOREVER FREE.

REMEMBER HOW MUCH I LOVED YOU
AND THE GOOD TIMES WE DID SHARE,
REMEMBER ALL THE TEARS YOU DRIED
WHEN MY BURDENS I COULD NOT BARE.

AND REMEMBER I AM WITH JESUS NOW
AND PLEASE DO NOT BE SAD.
FOR IN THIS LIFE DOWN HERE BELOW
YOUR THE BEST FRIEND I EVER HAD.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.
