TAYLOR, Eugene Calvin "Gene" Sr., 80, eldest son of Philip Lynn and Dolly Rhodes Taylor, passed away on Sunday, August 17, 2008. He is survived by his son, Eugene C. Taylor Jr.; three grand-children, Wendy C., Warren T. and Rachel A. Taylor ; two brothers, Philip L. Taylor Jr. and his wife, Clara Jean, and M. Courtney Taylor and his wife, Linda; one sister, Dorothy Taylor Zeller and her companion, Rudy Rogers. He retired as an optometrist with Bausch & Lomb with over 25 years of service. He was a self taught musician with a keen ear for music and loved to play the piano, accordion, harmonica and mouth harp. He was very active in community affairs; he volunteered as a dispatcher for the Ashland Police Dept., and was a frequent attendee of the Ashland Town Council meetings. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, August 20, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Nelsen Funeral Homes Reid Chapel, Ashland. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, August 21, in the First Baptist Church, Ashland, with burial in Woodland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Children's Hospital of Richmond.

Sorry to hear about your father Eugene (Doc Taylor). I worked with him years ago at Bausch and Lomb. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to the family, he will be missed.

I had not seen Mr. Taylor in years but I will never forget him. He was always so full of joy and laughter. He would do anything for anybody. I am honored to have known Mr. Taylor, he was a wonderful person. My deepest sympathy to his family, I know you will miss him dearly but he is in a better place.

Gene, I am so sad that you have lost your dad. I have known him for many years, dating back my teens when he and my mom worked together at B&L. Always know how very special you were to him and the wonderful memories you will have. Ashland has lost one of it's finest.

Gene was such a part of my childhood on Snead Street. I have many fond memories of playing in the "side yard". I will miss seeing him.
I am so sorry that I am out of town this week and will be unable to see you all. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Gene was a wonderful man and full of many ancedotes. He was very well known around town and he will be surely missed by the folks of Ashland; including all of his friends and former co-workers.Our condolences to the family.
