Doris Alworth Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch from Aug. 21 to Aug. 22, 2008.
ALWORTH, Doris, 69, departed in peace to go be with the Lord on Monday, August 18, 2008. She was born in Hawley, Pennsylvania, on September 29, 1938 to the late Henry Reafler and Katherine Reafler. Doris loved and is survived by four children, James Alworth and wife, Patricia, of Bethel, Connecticut, Sharon Menke and husband, Henry, of Morning View, Kentucky, Melinda Workman and husband, Gary, of Richmond, Virginia, and Bob Alworth and wife, Chrissy, of Newport News, Virginia; seven grandchildren, James and Olivia Alworth, Paige and Walter Menke, Jeremy and Bethannie Workman and Mary Elise Alworth; one sister, Lorraine Miller and husband, Albert, of Hawley, Pennsylvania. Doris will be remembered by those who loved her for her feisty "never give up" attitude, Yankee ingenuity, but mostly for the tasty treats that came out of her kitchen. She was always ready for a good laugh, a good cry, solving the world's problems, or just going for a walk. She will be sorely missed. The family would like to thank her friends from St. Paul's Lutheran Church, especially her quilting group; the Cheswick Walking Club; her dear neighbors, Sue, Linda and Makayla; Dottie; Toni; and many others too numerous to mention; for the many cards, calls and visits that were made. No card, call, or visit ever went unnoticed or unappreciated. The family will receive friends on Saturday, August 23, from 12 to 2 p.m, with a memorial service immediately following at Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Road, Mechanicsville. Burial will be private at Washington Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church, 8100 Shady Grove Rd., Mechanicsville, Va. 23111.

Doris may have been short in stature, but she was always full of spirit and determination. Doris came into my life in the ealry 1980s and left a mark that will never fade. Doris had a great sense of humor and always saw the good in those she met, actually she had the ability to bring out the best in people. We worked together at the Piece Goods Shop, I mean we worked! Doris never complained, okay some, but then she just took a deep breath and got the job done and well! She was always a take charge kind of woman, in her job, with her family and my guess is she is in Heaven reorganizing, straighten, looking out for those who need some guidance. She was an assistant manager for Piece Goods, my bet is she's willing to take that position in Heaven! God only takes the BEST!! Love,

Doris and I used to walk on some Saturday mornings when I could wake up early...We would talk about life and what it had to offer...She told me often that she would help "keep me straight"...I will always remember her for her candor...even when you didn't want to hear it...she kept you honest...i loved her dearly and will miss her very much...

Doris was my friend. She went swimming with me. She made me homemade bread. It was the best. She lives with God now.

Doris was my neighbor and best friend. We spent many hours togething talking about everything we could think to talk about. We took monthly shopping trips to Ashland to buy groceries and grab a bite to eat. There was hardly a day that went by that we didn't visit or talk on the phone. She was a wonderful dear friend and I am going to miss her dearly. My comfort is knowing that she is with God now.
