Maria Vidal Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch from Sep. 1 to Sep. 2, 2008.
VIDAL, Maria Caridad de Armas of Richmond, passed from the arms of her daughter into the arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus the Christ on Saturday, August 23, 2008. She was preceded in death by her husband, Pio J. Vidal Jr.; her parents, Oscar Armando de Armas and Maria de las Nieves Isoba de Armas; and her brother, Dr. Francisco M. de Armas. She is survived by her only child, Maria Vidal Bagley and son-in-law, Samuel S. Bagley. She is also survived by her nephew, Frank de Armas; his wife, Marie; their boys, Miguel and Manuel; her niece, Sandra de Armas Marsh; and her children, Jessica and Justin; and her sister-in-law, Raquel de Armas, all of Georgia. Also surviving is a cousin, Oscar Isoba and his wife, Julia, of New Jersey; as well as a niece, Rita M. Donohoe; and sister-in-law, Griselda Vidal, both of Richmond; and childhood friend, Victoria Wedemeyer. She leaves behind her daughter's dear mother-in-law, Louella S. Bagley, as well as many American, Latin American and church friends. One of her favorite pastimes was playing with Brinkley, her most recent granddog. She also enjoyed traveling the world, painting on canvas and spending time with her family and friends. She received her Masters of Education from the University of Havana in Cuba where she taught English. She departed Cuba on one of the last Freedom Flights to the United States in 1962 with her husband, daughter, and her parents. The First Baptist Church of Richmond sponsored the family as refugees after arriving in Miami and relocated them to Richmond, Va. to be near her brother who was in the process of receiving his residency in Beckley, West Virginia. After arriving in the states, she worked at the Foreign Mission Board before landing a teaching job at Douglas S. Freeman High School for 23 years. She touched many souls with her love of teaching. After she retired from Freeman, she continued to teach Spanish part-time at the University of Richmond and Virginia Commonwealth University. After retiring from her part-time teaching, she continued to teach Spanish as a volunteer at St. Mary's Woods Retirement Home, where she lived for a couple of years before moving to her last residence at Comfort Care Home on Harborough Road where she received compassionate and outstanding care. She was passionate about her God, which led her to use her creative gifts at West End Assembly of God by helping in the prop department for the many productions they put on through the years. The family will receive friends at Woody Funeral Home, 1771 E. Parham Road on Friday evening, September 5, 2008 from 6 to 8 p.m. with a Memorial service to follow in her honor on Saturday, September 6 at 11 a.m. at West End Assembly of God, 401 N. Parham Road, Richmond, Virginia 23229. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Music & Fine Arts Ministry at West End Assembly of God.

Maria,
I am so sad of your mother passing. I just found out her passing on Sunday afternoon and I am sorry I didn't make it to the service. It would have been nice to see you all grown up.
I was fortunate to have Mrs. Vidal as a mentor and an English/Spanish teacher; I was one of her first foreign exchange student from Honduras. Mrs. Vidal made me feel welcome and she was my guardian Angel. God bless her soul. She will be highly missed.

Maria,
I was saddened to read of your mom's passing. I worked for your dad in the mid 70's. His passing was such a loss to many of us at DSS. I kept in contact with your mom for a few years, then lost touch with her. Although I realized she was a teacher, it was so nice to read of all her other accomplishments throughout her life. Her story should be an inspiration to all who come to this country looking for freedom and a better life. She and Pio certainly lived the 'American Dream'. I know there will be a great reunion between Pio and Maria. Sorry I didn't make it to the service, it would have been nice to see you 'all grown up'. Much love to you and your family.

Maria was such a wonderful human being! I so enjoyed our conversations and discussions about teaching, life and most of all about our native country of Cuba. I feel blessed to have known her. Que vayas con Dios mi amiga.

I was a student of Senora Vidal's at Freeman High School (class of 1980)and cherished every moment of our class time....she will always remain as one of my favorite teachers, as her class was not only educational in Spanish (3 years with her), but about the culture within ourselves....she taught me about loving language, people and looking at everything with a heart warming spirit....I know that my life was blessed by her presence and I KNOW that heaven is a bit sweeter with Maria Caridad de Armas Vidal watching over us from there! God Bless your loving family, and thank you for sharing Senora Vidal with us!

Senora Vidal was one of my very favorite teachers. (Freeman, class of '67) Her enthusiasm for teaching and her love of the Spanish culture inspired me to major in Spanish in college. I have thought about Senora Vidal many times over the years. She had a kind heart and a gentle soul. I was blessed to have been one of her students.

Dear Maria and Family,
I am so saddened to hear of the loss of your mother, Maria. I'm not sure if you remember me, but I was in the Hermitage Class of '80 with you. I remember your great smile and how sweet you always were to everyone...and wanted to send you my thoughts this morning. I know how tough this is for you, and wanted you to know you were in my prayers. Please email me sometime if you want to catch up.

Thinking of you,

I was fortunate to have worked with Mrs. Vidal, while we were at Douglas S. Freeman High School. She loved teaching and had a great respect for those that worked along with her. My prayers and sympathy go to her daughter and other family members.
