Fred Meier Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch from Sep. 25 to Sep. 26, 2008.
MEIER, Fred, was lifted home at the age of 93 by his Lord Jesus Christ's sweet whisper, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant," on September 24, 2008. Fred was an adoring husband, loving and compassionate father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, and a kind-hearted, caring friend. He was born John Schroeder November 16, 1914 in Cincinnati, Ohio, and resided in the Children's Home until his adoption in 1922 by John and Mary Meier. As a young man he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps, working in California and Idaho. He eventually took classes at the University of Cincinnati and University of Dayton. He married Emma Ann Templeton in 1942, who preceded him in death in 1996 after 54 years of marriage. He loved his country and served in the Army Air Force during WWII. Following the war, his daughter, Barbara Ann, was born, and he went to work for the United States Department of Defense at Wright Patterson Air Force Base, Dayton, Ohio, and later at Cameron Station in Arlington, Virginia, from which he retired. Fred trusted his life to Jesus Christ as a young man and spent the remainder of his life serving Him. Until he died, he was an active member of the Gideon's International and Good News Jail and Prison Ministry. During his life he was a church member, Sunday school teacher, youth worker, jail and prison Bible study leader, choir member, usher, counselor and lay minister. He was an active member of Grove Avenue Baptist Church, Richmond, Virginia. He was an encouragement to everyone with whom he came in contact. Fred took every opportunity to share God's love and his faith in Jesus Christ wherever he went. He particularly loved his daily lunches at Arby's with his friends, Phil, Pam, and others, and did not miss opportunities to share God's love there as well. He was a lifelong student of the Bible and at age 91 published a book entitled Understanding the Times, a guide to understanding Biblical prophecy as it relates to our times. He leaves behind a legacy of faith and love to his family and friends who rejoice that he is walking beside his beloved Friend and Savior. He is survived and cherished by his daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and John Baranowski; granddaughters, Lori Boggs and Emily Ditmore; and sons-in-law, Parker Boggs and Justin Ditmore; great-grandchildren, Brennan and Abbey Boggs and Andrew and Ashley Ditmore; and a multitude of caring friends. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, September 27, 2008 at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 N. Parham Rd., where viewing will be Friday, September 26, 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Interment 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Fairfax Memorial Park, Fairfax, Va. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Grove Avenue Baptist Church, 8701 Ridge Rd., Richmond, Va. 23229.

Dear Barbara and John--
It is extremely difficult to put into words how much your father meant to our family. You, like I, were blessed with a wonderful, Godly dad, and they both knew how best to love and serve Him. Your dad was so faithful in visiting my dad when dad was so sick. He came on many occasions to sit with him when we had to attend to matters away from home. We appreciated your dad so much--he knew how much we loved him. We thank the Lord for giving us the opportunity to know him, and we thank you for sharing him with us.

As faithful members of Grove Avenue Baptist Church for the past 19 years (our family), not a Sunday went by that Fred Meir wasn't there to meet and greet the faithful members and visitors during the worship hour and Sunday School. The Grimes family was privileged to know and serve with him all those years and we will certainly miss him and his wisdom. Our condolences and sympathy go to Barbara and John and their wonderful daughters and families in the loss of their Dad and Grandfather. They have been our longtime Christian friends whom we love dearly. When our youngest son, Kevin, decided to give his life to Chirst nearly three years ago, Mr. Meir was the gentleman that escorted him to our Prayer Room to talk about Jesus and the decision that he was making. We could not have asked for a finer senior citizen to have held his hand and made this decision so comfortable and right. Those memories are sealed forever with us and our son. Thanks Mr. Meir for all you were to us and all that you did for our Lord. May you walk in Peace with Jesus until we all unite again one day. Now go with God and Rest eternally with him. You are where you belong forever.

To Barbara and Family,
Words cannot begin to express how much I cared about your Dad and how sorry I am for your loss. He always made me smile with his wit and think with his phenomenal wisdom. His love of the Lord and dedication to His service was truly a blessing and will be missed by many. Somehow I know that he is talking with Jesus right now and sharing his precious stories of his family and his time here on earth. The pain is all gone and the rejoicing has begun! Please know that I will cherish the times that I was able to visit with him and count myself blessed to have known, Mr. Fred Meier! You know I love you and your family and that I am here for you always. Take care my dear friend. Love, Charlene

Dear Barbara and John and family,
This was the most beautiful thing I have ever read and so fitting to such a wonderful man as your dear Father.
I was so happy to get to talk with you yesterday and look forward to seeing you tomorrow. I miss all my friends so much.
You know how special Mr. Fred was to many of us and as I shared with you he was my number 2 fan, next to my Mom of my music. I will always cherish his encouragement about that.
He was a mentor to many and will surely be missed at Grove and everywhere he went. Truly a precious man whose love for the Lord was always shown.
I believe God is calling His chosen ones home as there is not much time left here as we all well know and how very special it was of God to give us that clear word not only through the Bible but also through our Pastor during his surgery.
We rejoice with you in knowing we will see Mr. Fred again soon and I hope he gave Mama a big hug when he got there some how I think he did!
We love you so much and I also want to say thank you for always sending me a prayer card. You have been so faithful in that and you take after your sweet Dad. He left a wonderful legacy.
Please let us know if there is ANYTHING we can do, with AGAPE' love, your sister in Christ, Dana
