baxter was a special person to me. we talked on the phone shortly before his death, and i regret that i never got to richmond to visit him. i just this morning read of his death in the univ. of richmond alumni news. baxter and i became friends when he practiced law in grundy. throughout the years, we met in fla., richmond, and even costa rica. he was a special person to my family and myself. we will miss him.

Dear Baxter, I had fun with you at Wakefield... later we exchanged stories through letters, then emails, so I thought I'd write you another letter.....After college we lost touch, but my family and I continued to talk about Baxter, whose imagination can never be duplicated! Who else would wear a sleeveless leather coat, or turn a 4th of July party into a parade (complete with bandages for each guest, so they would look like war heroes returning from battle)? I'm so glad that we reconnected again two years before your death, so I could hear about your dog (who had his own credit card), and how you slept in the ruins of your Scottish clan's castle......how unique! I know you are doing stand up comedy for the angels now. When I get there, I look forward to laughing again at your delightful humor....keep 'em laughing, Batch. We all miss you!

Just opened the latest issue of the Corps Review and was saddened to read about Baxter's passing. I knew him from the old Vawter days where he was always creating some excitement in the dorm. He was a most friendly and likeable person. My sympathy to his family at this sad time.

Thanks for all love and kindness to Mom (Lee) words can never describe. I wish you all could have had more time together. Perhaps we'll all meet again, I am sure. I will certainly miss your bright insight and Hokie energy. May you rest in peace my friend and the Lord bless you always. Thanks again for all the joy and love you brought Mom. Also, and for my special Jack D. calendars that continue to come.

I'm so sorry for the loss. Baxter and I were good friends for decades. From all night parties, marathon B.S. sessions at the Bull and Bear Club, weekend road trips and much, much more, I have hundreds of fond memories. We lost track of each other for years but in recent years we have met for dinner several times and I especially have fond memories of getting to know him again at the Air National Guard reunion. Thanx, Bax, for your friendship and the wonderful memories

I was saddened to hear about Baxter's death. I had talked with him on several occasions recently. I loved Baxter and shared my heart with him. While I was commander of "A" squadron, he was a very loyal and dedicated cadet. He was a great encourager and always full of enthusiasm. During an intramural football game I was kicked in the head and had a concussion. Baxter took up a collection and brought it to the hospital. Thankfully, I regained conciousness and told him I was fine and to give the money back. He just wanted to show his concern. The junior class bought me a watch my senior year which I wore proudly for over 40 years until it finally gave out. I believe it was Bob Edmunds and Baxter who presented it to me on behalf of the class. Please accept my sincere and deep sympathy. My prayers are with you. May God comfort, strengthen, and encourage you during these difficult days. May you often be reminded of your very best memories of Baxter.

What a unique guy Baxter was -- we've met many, many people, but no other like him. The world will seem a less humorous and charming place without Baxter in it, so in his honor we'll just have to find it in ourselves to supply more of those things now that he won't be around to cheer us up, to point out the absurd, and to be our friend. We'll miss you, Baxter.

Baxter came to lunch with us on one of his trips to England. He was witty and told us more than a few stories from his past. We are saddened by news of his passing and will remember him with great fondness.

Truly a legend - and there'll never be another anywhere close. The memories he created will live forever. Just a few -- J. Studley Macgruder, surviving the Grundy winter in an uninsulated A-frame, Key West, the banjo he built (with the shark's tooth headstock) in order to play "With Care From Someone," a pup-tent in the mud at the Wise Bluegrass Festival, his love of all things British, how special each Christmas was to him, the maroon cars, his loyalty to his friends -- the list goes on and on. As one young Scotsman who visited with Baxter years ago exclaimed, "Whot a mon!"

Baxter was not just a Wakefield Class of '60 member, he was a legend. He was one of the first people I met in my senior year and he made me feel so welcome - a true friend. I was looking forward to finally seeing him again at the 50th reunion. For those of you who I don't know and that he leaves behind, I am so glad you had the opportunity to spend so many years with him. He will be sadly missed by all you knew him.

I am so sorry to learn of Baxter's passing. I have known Baxter since we were little kids attending the same church in Arlington and then going to high school with him. He was always so much fun at the reunions and always had some fun stories to tell about his life. He will be missed by everyone that knew him and especially at the 50th anniversary of wakefield in 2010. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

I knew our house would be filled with laughter anytime Baxter came to visit my Dad. I will always remember the stories of McGruder and the many interesting "grashers" exchanged over the years. He touched a lot of hearts in his life.

I am so very saddened to hear about Baxter's passing. I had spoken with him in Sept and despite all he still sounded like "the old Baxter" I knew and loved. He, Larry Bateman and I were neighbors in Barcroft as we lived on 4th St So with Baxter being right behind Larry on 5th. We grew up together beginning with lst year birthday parties on upwards. We went to elementary and high school together and practically lived in each other's houses. He will always live on in my heart with cherished memories and with love.

Baxter was one of our Wakefield Classmates who was blessed with not only brains, but also a quick wit. Reunions that I was able to attend were always full of fun, laugher, and stories of our "YOUTH" and High School Days. We will all miss him greatly - but I'm sure the 50th Reunion in 2010 will rekindle stories of this genuine friend. Also have a feeling that there was a Heavenly Gathering of Warriors to greet him - my late husband, Jim Bob Hill, and Paul Shannon leading the pack! My love, prayers, and sincere condolences to his family and friends! Please know that I'm sending huge hugs to all of you - please share them among the family and friends that gather to celebrate his most successful life!

Baxter you were a great friend to my niece, Yvonne. She will carry her memories of comfort with her where ever she goes. She was such a great care keeper and now you are free of pain and stress.

I've known Baxer nearly all my life. We grew up together in Arlington, Va. We met in the first grade at Barcroft Elementary School, and graduated from Wakefield High School in 1960. Baxter has been an active member of our alumni and an outstanding "Wakefield Warrior." At our 45th reunion he wore his Wakefield Jacket from high school and the same saddle shoes he wore in the 50's. We all loved him and will miss him at our upcoming reunions. My sincere condolences to his family and friends.
