Louis Michaux Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch from Oct. 23 to Oct. 26, 2008.
MICHAUX, Louis Arthur, 74, died Tuesday, October 21, 2008, at his home in Richmond, Va. He was the beloved husband of Carol Wilson Michaux. Born October 6, 1934 in Richmond, he was the son of the late William W. and Nancy Arthur Michaux, who were determined, in spite of being born with Cerebral Palsy, to give him as normal a childhood as possible. Having a facile and inquisitive mind trapped in an unresponsive body, he eagerly attended St. Christopher's School on an oversized tricycle, known throughout his Westhampton neighborhood as "Michauxmobile," fabricated for him by his father. The elder Mr. Michaux, an inventor, also fabricated, over Louis's electric typewriter keyboard, a metal covering perforated with a finger-sized hole above each key enabling him to type his school papers, one finger and one letter at a time. In 1953, several months before graduating from Thomas Jefferson High School, he won first place in Virginia in the National Employment of the Physically Handicapped essay contest, and shared fourth place in the national contest. On April 22 of that year, he traveled with his family to Washington, D.C. to receive his share of the prize money. It was the first year that a Virginian had placed as a prize winner. His essay "The Physically Handicapped - A National Asset" stressed the contribution that 18,000,000 handicapped Americans can make to the national economy and life, proving his point via an Office of Vocational Rehabilitation study in which 98% of employers reported that the handicapped had either the same or a lower accident rate than the able-bodied. He earned a degree in journalism from Richmond Professional Institute, now Virginia Commonwealth University in 1957. Four years later, he earned a master's degree from the Presbyterian School of Christian Education ...all without being able to hold a pen. He enjoyed saying that he was the world's only college graduate who could not write his own name. It was the combination of his steel-trap mind, pluck and determination that gave him the ability to achieve that which to others would be unachievable. The transition from life as a student, to that of an adult with no prospects, transformed him into a champion for the rights of the disabled, wherever and whenever he could. By 1967, he had created and organized the Adult Development Center for the Physically Handicapped, domiciled initially in the basement of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, and had convinced St. Paul's and the United Way to fund the bulk of its financial needs. The Center was his solution for enabling physically handicapped adults, who languished with nothing to do after finishing their schooling, to leave their homes each week day and within his or her physical handicap realize and achieve his/her greatest human potential, including the restoration or development of a sense of self-worth. The Center, as he envisioned it, was to provide two important components missing in the lives of many adult handicapped: activities, which are not only recreational, but also therapeutic, and friends of all ages. He continued for many years to battle for the disabled both as Program Director for the Center, and in the early 80's by writing a book to raise awareness of the importance to the handicapped of graded corner curbs, handicapped accessible vehicles, ramps, electronic- opening doors, and removing all architectural barriers. In the 25 intervening years, most of the improvements for which he advocated have come to be standard. He also was a candidate for Richmond City Council. Mr. Michaux's

I was a younger Westhampton neighbor of Louis Michaux and remember seeing him tricycling to and from St. Chris throughout my growing up years. He was an inspiration then, and clearly he lived his life in just the same way. What a difference he made for so many people! My condolences to all the Michauxs. Carter B.

Louis Michaux was and is a hero to me. My brother, Stevie, who has just lost his wife of 50 years and who hasn't heard yet of Louis' passing, was his friend at St. Christopher's, and Louis spent two glorious summers with us on Cape Cod. Most of his time was spent with Stevie, but on many summer afternoons, Louis, playing for the NY Giants and I the Boston Red Sox, would engage in happy and ferocious innings of 'roll the ball at the bat,' with simultaneous commentary by Louis, himself ('Michaux has hit a hot grounder past the diving shortstop...), delivered with glee and eloquence. On rainy days we often played checkers, and he usually whipped all comers. He invariably chose the red ones, saying with a smile, 'red is for valor.' He was himself full of valor. A more courageous, gentle, good-humored, and precious person I have never known. My love and deepest sympathy to you, Ellen,
Ruth

To all the Michauxs: My dad, Page Bullock, talked so often about Michaux and had copies of his books. I always felt like I knew Michaux because of my dad's pride in his ability to overcome adversity. May God comfort you all at this time of loss. We love all the Michauxs.

I had the pleasure of being a physical therapist of Mr. Michaux's. I distinctly remember that infectious smile and his determination to make any physical task less of a burden to his wife, Carol. Yes indeed, that mind was a steel trap. What a great mind! What a good heart!

I can remember sitting "desk duty" in Founder's Hall at RPI and seeing Louie fight his way through the heavy front doors with a big grin on his face as he danced the length of the hall to pick up his date! Nothing ever stopped him and he approached each obstacle with good humor and a tenacity that was amazing. He inspired in all of us a sense of pride at what the human spirit can accomplish.

As Louis's neice, I remember the typewriter and the three-wheeled bike, and loved to ride the bike when I went to visit. Louis loved to tease and to be teased, and always wanted to know what baseball team I was rooting for and why! All of my friends at St. Catherine's remember when he would come occasionally to be in charge of the Sunday night hymn sing. He loved people , and all of us are sad he is gone.

I didn't know Louis either but saw him over a period of many years in Richmond, usually on his bike or waiting for the Grove Ave. bus. He was always going somewhere, no matter how hard it would be to get there! The life he was dealt would have defeated most, but he turned it into one of courage and inspiration and accomplished more than the rest of us who had no major handicaps. Well done, Louis!

Louis attended most of the the same schools as I did throughout the years, and always I was amazed at his courage, determination, and many accomplishments. I have a wonderful vision of Louis running freely in Heaven with no disabilities to deter him. He truly overcame obstacles that would have defeated many of us. He always will be my hero!
