Allen Coleman Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch from Oct. 29 to Oct. 31, 2008.
COLEMAN, Allen N., 54, passed away on Tuesday, October 28, after a battle with cancer. Allen is survived by his wife of 31 years, Wanda Shelton Coleman; his mother, Ruth Wells Hubbard; his father, Neal and his wife, Pat; his sister, Wanda Overmann and her husband, Ed; two nephews and their wives, Eddie and Elizabeth Overmann and Scott and Jen Overmann and their families; mother-in-law, Estelle R. Shelton; sister-in-law, Jeannie Carneal; brother-in-law, Andy Shelton; and two nieces, April D. Williams and her family and Jennifer M. Carneal. Allen's brother, Gary, predeceased him in 1983. Raised in Danville, he moved to Richmond in 1976, with Daniel & Co., Inc. A few years later he formed Allen N. Coleman, Inc. A custom home builder, he started building his first homes in the Old House Run subdivision and then in other West End subdivisions, including the Colonies, Riverlake Colony and Windsor Place. Over the past decade, Allen had transitioned most of his building into Goochland County, where he built custom estate homes, primarily in the Meadows, Kinloch and around Hermitage Country Club. From his humble beginnings, Allen had become one the most respected homebuilders in the Richmond area, known for his exceptional quality and unwavering integrity. An accomplished golfer, Allen played at both Hermitage and Kinloch Golf Clubs, where he had many friends. In recent years, he had developed a passion for fly-fishing and he had begun exploring some of the finer rivers and streams across the country. He also traveled extensively around the world with Wanda, and particularly enjoyed cruising throughout the port cities of Scandinavia, the Mediterranean and the Greek Isles. Allen leaves behind an extended circle of friends who will miss him dearly. A memorial service will be held Friday, October 31, at 4 p.m., at Woody's Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Rd. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Judes Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tenn. 38105.

Wanda,

I heared only moments ago of Alan's passing and I was both shocked and saddened as I made the phone call to Frank to let him know. As I write this to you, I am filled by both smiles and tears. What a kind, honorable, forthright gentleman he was. It was so nice to be surrouded by and work with someone who took pride in their work; not to mention the talent and reputation that spoke volumes of his tremendous character. I probably last saw him early summer (it was always a pleasure) he was telling me you all were getting ready for a vacation. Life is, unfortunately, both bitter and sweet. I hope you find strength in your friendships and in the love you and Alan obviously shared for each other. I hope that will be a comfort to you during this time. No matter what restrictions time puts on us, how long or short, it is still always worth it in the end. I know you feel that way. Treasure your memories and the knowledge that he was held in the highest esteem and loved by so many. We feel blessed to have known him and fortunate to have had him build a home we are lucky enough to have. I often speak of how delightful he made the home building process; and that surely is a feat that will be neither matched or outdone. I feel equally blessed to let my home stand as a memorial to a remarkable home builder and an even more remarkable, friend, husband, homebuilder extrodinaire and an all around great guy. Everyone asked us what we were going to call our home once it was built and we never did think of anything but now I will take pride in simply calling it "The Home that Alan Coleman built." We would love to see you when you are feeling up to it. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Deepest Sympathies and Love,
Dana & Frank Rotman

Dear Wanda,

While our lives went separate ways many years ago, I appreciated how you tried to keep in touch with April and me.

You and Allen were always the ideal couple in my young mind!!!!

For me, I think what stands out to me about Allen was that he was always the same. I never had to guess "how" he was going to act or be.

I know he loved you, Wanda; never forget that.

I'll be praying for you as you walk through this challenging season.

Too, thanks for loving on my daughter and grandchildren!

Jeremiah 29:11-12 Love, ellen

Wanda, Don and I were shocked and saddened to hear of Allen's passing. It seems like yesterday when he was smiling at me while I huffed and puffed (7 months pregnant) my way into his office with our house plans. He was such an artist in his own right and had an eye for harmony in all things. He was also one of the classiest gentlemen I have known. We are really going to miss him. I am so sorry for our collective loss, but mostly for you as you were best friends since forever. We are blessed that we live in an eternal memory of his spirit and his love of beauty and all things graceful.

With great love for you both,
Murside and Don Jean

Dear Wanda,
My father, John Ingram, called this morning to tell me about Allen passing away. He shared with me how much he thought of both of you and his fond memories of meeting you both soon after you and Allen moved to Richmond. You and Allen are 2 of his all time favorite people. While Dad still goes to his office on Libbie most days, he has been under the weather lately and is very sad that he will not be able to attend Allen's memorial service tomorrow. He wanted me to let you know he and Sue are thinking about you and send you their love. Allen will be deeply missed.

Wanda, Susan Coleman who is a good friend of mine and married to Rod Coleman, Allen's cousin, let me know about Allen's passing. I am so sorry for your loss. I have only heard of your family outings through Susan and I know you and Allen enjoyed a wonderful life together and he was a fabulous, well respected builder of beautiful homes in Western Henrico and Goochland counties. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time. His passing brought back so many memories of many years ago when I was with Allen's good friend, Woody Murphy, and you and I were cheerleaders together at GWHS so many years ago. Messages like this helped to sustain me and my family during the recent passing of my mom, so I hope this will be a comfort to you as well. You and Allen have both held a very special place in my heart ever since we met as college freshmen.
