THOMPSON, Merriweather Ford, 87, of Straightstone Road, Long Island, Va., died Saturday, November 1, 2008, after a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Virginia Francis Thompson. He was born March 14, 1921 in Pittsylvania County, a son of the late Charles A. Thompson and Flossie Barksdale Thompson. He was a member of Straightstone Baptist Church, served as a U.S. Navy veteran during WWII and the Korean Conflict and was the former Owner/Operator of Thompson's Self Service in Straightstone for 35 years. He is survived by a daughter, Lee Thompson Payne and her husband, Michael, of Glen Allen, Va.; two loving grandchildren, Sydney and Andrew Payne of Glen Allen; one sister, Ellen Thompson Moseley of Richmond. Five brothers and two sisters preceded him in death. The Rev. James Manuel and Rev. Alan Blanks will conduct a funeral service on Tuesday, November 4, 2008 at 11 a.m. in the Straightstone Baptist Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery with military rites being conducted by V.F.W. Post 4165 and D.A.V. Chapter 46. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Finch & Finch Funeral and Cremation Service, Altavista. Meriwether was one of the nicest men I have ever met. Growing up in Long Island , my uncle and I frequent his establishment, he was always kind and upbeat.
