Howard MacCord Obituary

Published by Bliley's Funeral Home Central Chapel from Nov. 5 to Nov. 6, 2008.
MacCORD, Howard Arthur Sr., 93, of Brandermill Woods Retirement Community, Midlothian, died November 3, 2008, after a brief hospi-talization. He was born in Irvington, New Jersey on October 23, 1915. He is survived by his wife, Betsy Fleshman MacCord of Midlothian; daughters, Helen DeWell Winn and her husband, Jack, of Richmond, and Virginia Matthews and her husband, Harry, of Mouth of Wilson, Virginia; and son, Howard A. MacCord Jr. and his wife, Alison, of Greensboro, N.C.; grandchildren, Sean DeWell and his wife, Carolina, of Richmond, David DeWell of Ft. Worth, Texas, Lesley Winn, and John Winn and his wife, Susanna, of Richmond; great-grandchildren, Jacob DeWell of Ft. Worth, Texas, and Killian and Raif Winn of Richmond. Survivors also include sisters, Evelyn Hildebrand of Chambersburg, Pa., Jeanne Carter of Pocomoke City, Md., and Elnora Terry and her husband, Ed, of Las Cruces, N.M. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Elsie B. MacCord, in 1972. Mr. MacCord retired from the U.S. Army as a Colonel, after 30 years of service. He joined the National Guard in 1930, when he was only 15, and went into the Army in February of 1941. His World War II service took him to France and Germany. He served in post-war Japan and later in the Korean conflict. His lifelong interest in archeology started in the 1930s, helping excavate prehistoric sites around his boyhood hometown of Washington, D.C. While in the Army, he excavated in Japan and Korea during his tours of duty. Following his retirement from the military in 1962, he turned his lifelong avocation into a new career as an archeologist with the Virginia State Library (now the Library of Virginia), from which he retired in 1976. He worked as a consulting archeologist until 1983. He worked closely with the Archeological Society of Virginia during all those years, reaching out to educate the public. His interest in archeology did not abate with retirement; he continued his work and contributed to the advancement of that field until his death. His contributions to Virginia archeology were extensive. They include excavations, or testing, at over 160 sites all over Virginia. His published works include over 127 articles, including his first publication in 1943 and his most recent in 2007. His remains rest at Bliley's-Central, 3801 Augusta Ave., Richmond, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, November 6. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, November 22, 2008 at Brandermill Church, Midlothian. Burial in Arlington National Cemetery at 3 p.m. Tuesday, December 9. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to ASV/Kittiewan, P.O. Box 70395, Richmond, Va. 23255, or to a charity of your choice.

In My Pocket

I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.

Colonel Howard MacCord Sr.

I met Col. MacCord through my father's WWII reunions with the 167th Combat Engineering Battalion.Howard will be missed at these events. He was our fearless leader.

“The Colonel” was a born leader, a gracious man and scintillating conversationalist. He died as he lived, with thoughtful purpose and dignity.

Betsy, my heart and prayers go out to you. What a lucky - lucky man he was to have found you as his mate.

Blessings to you and your family.

Love-

Deborah Ziegler

To Mrs. MacCord and all of Howard's Family--
We will deeply miss Howard, as will all of the archaeological community. No meeting will ever be quite the same, although we will always expect to turn a corner and find the Colonel. He was a pioneer and it was an honor to know him. Our thoughts are with you.

Please accept my deepest sympathy for the loss of this fine man. The only time I ever saw him was as the speaker at a club meeting. His heartfelt enthusiasm, love of, and knowledge of Indian life was tremendous. I hope those in the family inspired by the same "bug" can continue on with his work.

Hi, Betsy - I met you at Art and Allison's house in Greensboro quite a while ago. I am so sorry to hear of Uncle Howard's death but I know he had a great life and was ready for whatever lay before him. My mother was married to Robert, the older brother and she passed away almost 3 years ago. I have many fond memories of visiting Uncle Howard in Staunton, VA when he had a skating rink. We loved to visit them in the summer.

I know what you must be going through at this time - I know how difficult it was when Mom died but she was ready - we just didn't want to let go. You and the family will be on my mind in the coming days and weeks.

Love, Jane Elizabeth

Betsy and family
Words cannot express the sense of loss I feel in Howards absence. He was a presence in my life from my earliest memories and a friend of mine, my parents, uncle, and grandparents. I believe that he can truely be described as the "Father of Archaeology" in Virginia. To
Howard I can only say; I will see you when the roses bloom again.

To Howard's family, and especially Betsy: Howard was a mentor and a gadfly for Virginia's archeological community, and we all depended upon his sage advice. For that he will be sorely missed by all. More importantly, this gentle man and his lady will always occupy a warm place in my heart for the times they reached out in friendship and concern to me personally. The relationship was special. Thank you, Howard and Betsy!
